Market Order vs. Limit Order: Which Should You Use When Buying Shares?

A market order prioritizes prompt execution but does not guarantee a price. A buy limit order caps what you will pay but may not fill.

Choose a market order when getting the purchase executed promptly matters more to you than controlling the exact price. Choose a buy limit order when you have a maximum price and would rather risk missing the trade than pay more. Neither order type guarantees both execution and price. The right choice depends on which trade-off you are willing to accept.

How the two order types differ

A market order tells your broker to seek execution at the best available price. It generally executes promptly, but the price is not guaranteed: the displayed quote or last-traded price may change before the order reaches a market. A buy limit order sets the highest price you are willing to pay. It can execute at that price or lower, but it may not execute at all. The SEC describes these as the core differences in its Understanding Order Types investor bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Order type What it prioritizes What you give up
Market order Seeking execution at the best available price, generally promptly Control over the purchase price
Buy limit order Paying no more than the limit price A guaranteed execution

In plain terms, a market order favors the chance of buying now; a limit order favors a price ceiling. A market order is not a promise to buy at the quote you saw, and a limit order is not a reservation that guarantees you shares at your chosen price. Investor.gov also explains the distinctions in its pages on types of orders and limit orders.

Neither order combines the advantages of both. A market order does not lock in a price, while a limit order does not ensure the order will be matched. The practical decision is therefore not “Which order is always better?” but “Which uncertainty can I accept for this purchase?” If not getting the shares is the greater concern, the market order’s execution priority may fit. If paying above a firm ceiling is unacceptable, the limit order’s price restriction may fit—even if the order remains open or expires without a fill.

When a market order may make sense

Consider a market order if your priority is to submit an order intended to execute promptly and you accept that its eventual price may differ from the quote or the most recent trade. The order seeks the best available price when it is executed; it does not lock in the price visible when you press the buy button.

That distinction matters because a quote reflects available trading interest for particular quantities, and prices can move while an order is being routed. If a market order is large, it may fill in pieces at different prices rather than all at one price. The SEC’s explanation of how an order is executed describes the routing process and why the final execution can differ from what a customer saw.

Illustration: accepting an uncertain price

Suppose you want to buy shares and decide that getting the order executed matters more than setting a strict maximum. A market order asks the broker to seek execution at the best available price. If the price changes during routing, you may pay a different amount from the quote you saw. This is an illustration of the order’s mechanics, not a prediction of how much a price might move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a larger order, another consideration is that the displayed quote may apply to fewer shares than you are trying to buy. The broker may execute available shares in separate pieces, with different prices for different portions. The final result can therefore involve both price movement and multiple fills; the order type does not promise that every share will be bought at one displayed price.

When a buy limit order may make sense

Consider a buy limit order if you have a firm maximum price and are willing to wait or miss the purchase rather than pay above it. The order can execute only at the limit price or lower. Setting the limit does not force the market to supply shares at that price, nor does touching the limit by itself guarantee that your order will be matched.

Illustration: setting a price ceiling

If you set a buy limit at $50, the order may execute at $50 or less, but not above $50. If the market price stays above $50 or moves away before your order is matched, it may remain unfilled. The example explains the rule; it is not a claim about a typical stock price or execution outcome.

Use the limit price to express the most you are willing to pay, not as a forecast that the share will reach that price. A price can reach your limit while other orders are ahead of yours or available shares are insufficient, so the order may receive only a partial fill or none.

That is why “the stock traded at my limit” and “my order filled” are not equivalent. The order still has to be active and matched. If only some of the shares are available for a match, part of the order may execute while the remainder stays open under its instructions. If the price moves away, the remaining portion may not fill. A limit order can protect a buyer from paying more than the chosen price, but it cannot guarantee access to shares at that price.

A practical way to choose

  1. Decide which risk you prefer. If the bigger concern is failing to get the purchase, a market order aligns with that priority, while leaving the execution price uncertain. If the bigger concern is paying more than a chosen amount, a buy limit order sets that ceiling, while leaving execution uncertain.
  2. Set your price rule before submitting. For a market order, recognize that the quote is not a guaranteed price. For a buy limit, choose the highest price you would actually accept; do not assume the order will fill merely because the stock trades at that level.
  3. Check the broker’s order choices and instructions. Available order types, order duration, and handling of open or canceled orders can vary by firm. Review the broker’s terms for the order you are entering. Investor.gov’s online investing guidance explains why investors should understand the instructions and broker policies involved.
  4. Review what happened after submission. Check whether the order executed, partially executed, remains open, or was canceled. For an unfilled limit order, decide whether to leave it open under its current instructions, change it, or cancel it; do not assume it will remain active indefinitely.

Before you submit, it can help to check the order ticket carefully: confirm that you selected a market or limit order as intended, verify the quantity and any limit price, and read the order-duration choice. These instructions matter because a broker’s available order types and policies are not necessarily identical to another firm’s. If the order is not filled right away, check the status rather than assuming that the ticket has disappeared or will remain active.

Why the displayed quote is not a promise

A stock order travels from you to your broker, which decides where to route it. The price can change during that interval, and displayed quotes apply to specific quantities rather than guaranteeing a price for every order size. Brokers have a duty to seek the best execution reasonably available for customers, but that duty does not guarantee a particular price or execution time. See Investor.gov’s explanation of order execution.

This routing context helps explain why the two order types control different things. A market order leaves the price open to available market conditions in pursuit of execution. A limit order constrains the price, but the market must offer a match at that limit or better while the order is active.

Submitting an order through an app or website may feel instantaneous, but routing and execution are not instantaneous. The broker receives the order and chooses where to send it; by the time it reaches a market, prices or available trading interest may have changed. The best-execution duty means the broker must seek the best execution reasonably available for its customers’ orders. It does not mean the broker can promise the price shown at submission, a specific execution time, or that an order will fill.

For a market order, this distinction is especially important because the instruction does not set a maximum price. For a buy limit order, it is important for a different reason: the order will not execute above the limit, but the market must still have an available match at or below it. In both cases, the quote is information about a particular moment and quantity, not a guarantee covering every order.

Partial fills, order duration, and open orders

An order does not always resolve as one complete transaction at one price. A large market order may execute in pieces at different prices; a limit order may be matched for only some of the shares sought. Check the broker’s order-status information so you know whether shares have been purchased and whether any remainder is still open.

Order duration and the treatment of open or canceled orders depend on the broker’s available instructions and policies. Before submitting, verify how long the order is intended to remain active and what happens to any unfilled portion. Do not assume that an order will carry over to another session or that a cancellation takes effect before any already-routed execution.

A partial fill means that some, but not all, of the requested shares have been bought. For example, a limit order could receive a match for part of its quantity while the rest remains open, depending on the order’s status and broker handling. Reviewing the order status helps you distinguish a completed purchase from a partial one and see whether a remainder is still active. If you no longer want the rest of the order, use the broker’s cancellation process and check its status afterward; do not assume a cancellation reverses shares that have already executed.

Order duration is sometimes described as the order’s time in force: how long it is intended to remain active. The exact choices and their handling vary by firm. Read the ticket and broker instructions to learn whether an unfilled order remains open, ends at a session boundary, or is handled another way. Likewise, an open order is not automatically a promise that the broker will keep trying indefinitely. Confirm its status and any remaining quantity rather than relying on memory of when it was entered.

Extra caution with extended-hours trading

Trading outside regular market hours adds uncertainty. Consolidated quote and trade data may not be readily available, many brokers accept only limit orders during extended hours, and broker rules determine what happens to an unfilled order. Check the firm’s rules and the specific session’s order handling before submitting. The SEC details these risks in its Extended-Hours Trading investor bulletin.

If a broker allows an order during an extended session, do not assume that its availability or handling matches regular trading. In particular, confirm whether the order can execute in that session and what happens if it remains unfilled when the session ends.

Because quote and trade data may be less readily available in extended-hours trading, the price information you see may not provide the same picture as consolidated data during regular hours. A broker may also restrict which order types it accepts in those sessions. If it accepts only limit orders, your order still may not execute; the limit price protects the price ceiling, not the likelihood of a fill. Check whether an unfilled order ends with the session or is handled under another broker instruction before placing it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the last trade as the market-order price. The most recent transaction is historical; it is not necessarily the price available when your order executes.
  • Assuming a limit guarantees a purchase. A limit controls the maximum price, not whether enough shares will be available to match the order.
  • Ignoring the possibility of multiple fills. A large market order may execute at different prices, and a limit order may be only partly filled.
  • Leaving an order’s duration to assumption. Check the broker’s instructions for how long an order remains active and how open or canceled orders are handled.
  • Assuming extended-hours handling is the same as regular-session handling. Availability and unfilled-order rules can differ by broker.
  • Confusing best execution with a guaranteed result. A broker’s duty to seek the best execution reasonably available does not promise a particular price or a particular time to fill.
  • Assuming a cancellation means no shares were bought. Check the order status and any executions; a cancellation does not undo a portion that has already filled.

Bottom line: choose the trade-off you can accept

Use a market order when prompt execution is your priority and you accept that the final price is not guaranteed. Use a buy limit order when your maximum acceptable price matters more than certainty of execution. Before submitting either, understand the broker’s order duration and handling rules; for extended-hours trading, verify the additional restrictions and risks.

This is general educational information, not a recommendation tailored to your financial circumstances. The SEC’s order-types bulletin and Investor.gov’s materials explain the mechanics, but the decision depends on the price and execution trade-off you are prepared to make.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is safer when buying shares: a market order or a limit order?

They manage different risks, so neither is universally safer. A market order seeks prompt execution but does not guarantee the price. A buy limit order sets the maximum price you will pay, but it may not execute. Choose based on whether price control or the chance of execution matters more to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a market order execute at the price I see on the screen?

Not necessarily. The quote or last-traded price may change while the order is routed, and a displayed quote applies to particular quantities. A market order seeks the best available price when it executes; it does not lock in the price displayed when you submit it.

Does a buy limit order guarantee that I will buy the shares?

No. It can execute only at the limit price or lower, but the market must offer a match while the order is active. If the price moves away, other orders are matched first, or there are not enough shares available, the order may be partially filled or remain unfilled.

Can one order fill at several prices or only for part of my quantity?

Yes. A large market order may execute in pieces at different prices, and a limit order may be matched for only part of the requested shares. Check your broker’s order-status information to see what filled and whether any remainder is still open.

What happens if my limit order is still open or I cancel it?

Duration and open- or canceled-order handling depend on the broker’s instructions and policies. Check how long the order is intended to remain active and confirm its status after changing or canceling it. A cancellation does not reverse shares that have already executed, and you should not assume an order carries into another session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a market order during extended-hours trading?

Broker rules vary, and many brokers accept only limit orders during extended hours. Consolidated quote and trade data may not be readily available, and the broker determines how unfilled orders are handled. Check whether your order type is accepted in that session and what happens if it remains unfilled.

Does a broker’s best-execution duty guarantee my price?

No. A broker has a duty to seek the best execution reasonably available for customer orders, but that does not guarantee a particular price or execution time.

The Bottom Line

Choose the order type according to the uncertainty you can accept: a market order seeks prompt execution without locking in the price, while a buy limit order sets a price ceiling without guaranteeing a fill. Review the broker’s order duration, status, and session rules before submitting.
