Mark Zuckerberg’s Charity Ends DEI Efforts and Shifts to Science

CZI ended its DEIA team and Diverse Slate Practice in February 2025, then made Biohub its primary philanthropic effort. Here’s what changed and what remained.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, ended its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility team and discontinued its Diverse Slate Practice in February 2025. The announcement followed a January staff reassurance—reported by The Guardian—that Meta’s separate DEI changes would not affect CZI. CZI said it had already wound down social-advocacy funding and was concentrating its resources on science; in November 2025, the founders named Biohub their primary philanthropic effort.

What changed at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative?

CZI’s February 18, 2025 announcement described several changes, not a single overnight cancellation. Chief operating officer Marc Malandro said the organization had discontinued funding for social advocacy, ended its DEIA team, and discontinued its Diverse Slate Practice, a hiring practice. CZI said the three DEIA team members had moved to other roles and responsibilities. CZI’s published message tied the review to its science focus and the “current legal and policy landscape.”

The timing is why the change was described as a U-turn. The Guardian reported that a CZI HR executive had reassured staff in January 2025 that Meta’s DEI changes did not affect CZI; the organization announced the DEIA and hiring-practice changes the following month. The January communication is reported by The Guardian, rather than published in full by CZI, so the two accounts should be understood as reporting of the staff message and the organization’s subsequent public statement, respectively. The Guardian’s account

What ended, and what did not

CZI said it had decided “a few years ago” to wind down social advocacy and had discontinued that funding. It named immigration reform and a five-year racial-equity grantmaking program, announced in 2020, among the affected work. The statement did not say that every grant ended on February 18: CZI said it would honor a small number of earlier multi-year commitments, but none would support political activism.

  • FUN EXPERIMENTS TIME FOR LITTLE SCIENTIST: Nurture your kids' curiosity by introducing simple science experiments! Science experiments give children the opportunity to explore and learn in new ways.
  • LEARNING & EDUCATIONAL SCIENCE GIFTS IDEAD: for Christmas, birthdays, summer-winter activities, school breaks, and weekend fun. The kids will get a good way to learn through play, and also parents will get some quality science time in with kids.

In Malandro’s words, “There are a small number of multi-year grant commitments we made previously that we will still honor, but none of these will support political activism.” That distinction matters: ending a funding area does not necessarily terminate every commitment already made under it.

Why did CZI stop funding social advocacy?

CZI’s explanation is that it had been shifting toward science over time and had intended its social-advocacy work to be limited in duration. In its February 2025 statement, Malandro wrote: “The Leadership Team and I have been reviewing CZI’s programs and practices to ensure that they align with our focus as a science philanthropy as well as the current legal and policy landscape.”

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported in August 2026 that former grantees described the funding change as abrupt, while CZI maintained that social advocacy had always been intended as a five-year endeavor. The organization also said it had invested hundreds of millions of dollars to expand opportunity and strengthen communities. These accounts differ on how the transition felt to those relying on grants; available reporting does not establish the founders’ private political motives or resolve whether the exit was sufficiently gradual for affected organizations. The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s 2026 report

How CZI’s philanthropic approach shifted

The change is broader than a change in grant categories: CZI is emphasizing research infrastructure and scientific tools rather than social-advocacy grants and direct community programs. The contrast can be summarized this way:

Area Earlier work described in CZI’s statements and reporting Science focus
Mission area Social advocacy, including immigration reform, and a five-year racial-equity grantmaking program Biology and health research
Mechanism Grants and direct programs, including education Research teams, tools, and infrastructure
Time horizon A five-year advocacy grantmaking program, according to CZI; earlier multi-year commitments still being honored Zuckerberg described science projects to AP as spanning 10–15 years
Transition and accountability CZI cited remaining grant commitments; grantees and community members reported consequences and a sense of abruptness Future results depend on long-term research; the November announcement established a priority, not a completed outcome

One documented community consequence involved The Primary School, which announced that its two East Palo Alto locations would close after the 2025–26 school year after losing CZI as its sole donor. The Washington Post reported that CZI provided a $50 million parting gift, including direct education support and a district grant. That is one reported transition, not evidence that every affected community had the same experience. The Washington Post’s report on The Primary School

What is Biohub, and what does the new focus mean?

Biohub is CZI’s science effort focused on biology and health. In November 2025, Zuckerberg and Chan said it would become their primary philanthropic effort and receive the vast majority of their resources, while CZI would continue other philanthropic work. They described a strategy combining biology and AI. Zuckerberg told AP, “So we basically looked at the ecosystem of science funding and decided that the place that we can make the biggest impact was on tool development.” AP’s report on the Biohub announcement

Research priorities CZI identified

CZI’s February 2025 statement identified four challenges for its science work:

  • Build an AI-based virtual cell model.
  • Develop advanced imaging systems to observe living cells.
  • Create instruments to study tissues and understand inflammation.
  • Engineer or harness the immune system for earlier disease detection, prevention, or treatment.

The Washington Post later reported that Biohub had launched a Virtual Immune System project intended to model the human immune system and explore simulation of immune therapies and disease prevention. This is an example of the new direction, not evidence that the project has already delivered those outcomes. The Washington Post’s report on the Virtual Immune System

What the reported investment figures mean

AP reported in November 2025 that CZI had given $4 billion to basic-science research since Biohub launched in 2016, excluding operating expenses for a large-scale computing cluster. AP also reported CZI’s projection that it was on track to double that amount over the next decade; that is a forecast, not a completed investment. Separately, AP described CZI’s operating budget as about $1 billion a year. The budget figure is not interchangeable with the reported research donations. AP’s report on CZI’s science investment

What the shift means for the organization’s original commitments

Zuckerberg and Chan launched CZI in 2015 with goals that included advancing human potential and promoting equality. The move toward Biohub makes science the dominant philanthropic priority, but the November 2025 announcement did not say CZI would stop every other philanthropic effort. CZI’s stated position, the continuation of a small number of grant commitments, and reported effects on particular communities are separate parts of the transition—not proof that all programs or grants ended at once.
