Mark Cuban’s argument is that a leaner drug seller can pressure a sprawling prescription business by showing how its prices are built, selling directly, and avoiding reliance on pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). That is his competitive thesis, not proof that every incumbent moves slowly or that Cost Plus Drugs is cheaper for every prescription. Rebecca Bellan’s August 28, 2025, TechCrunch report describes the model and Cuban’s claims; it does not establish current prices or company operations.
What is Cuban trying to change?
Cuban’s critique starts with a patient’s uncertainty: after receiving a prescription, “you have no idea what the cost to you is going to be,” he told TechCrunch. He argues that established companies price drugs to prevailing market conditions while Cost Plus Drugs aims to show a cost-based calculation. His summary was: “They price to market; we price based off of cost.”
TechCrunch reported that Cuban launched Cost Plus Drugs in 2022 as a way to make prescription pricing more transparent. The article’s headline refers to a $5 trillion healthcare machine, but that framing comes from Cuban and the article; it should not be read as an independently established estimate of current U.S. healthcare spending.
How does Cost Plus Drugs price medicine?
In the formula TechCrunch reported on August 28, 2025, the listed drug cost was increased by a 15% markup, a $5 pharmacy fee, and shipping. Those are figures from dated reporting, not a verified current pricing schedule. The report does not establish whether the formula applies to every medicine or how a particular prescription compares with a patient’s insurance benefits.

- AM/PM COMPARTMENTS: Plan doses for morning and evening with separate AM/PM compartments
- LARGE CAPACITY: Each compartment can hold 12 aspirin sized tablets
- CONTOURED BOTTOMS: Planner compartments have contoured bottoms so retrieving your medication out of the planner is simple
- CLEAR LIDS: Clear planner lids keep your medication visable to help prevent missed doses
- HEALTHY LIVING: Amazon Basic Care products make living healthier simply easier
A transparent formula can make components easier to see, but it does not by itself show that a purchase is the lowest-cost option. For a meaningful comparison, check the same medicine, strength, quantity, dispensing channel, shipping and date, and compare the current out-of-pocket total after any insurance benefits.
Can it be cheaper than a regular pharmacy?
It may be for some prescriptions, but the reporting does not support a blanket answer. Cuban cited a generic chemotherapy medicine he said could cost $21 through Cost Plus Drugs, compared with thousands elsewhere. TechCrunch did not name the medicine or establish an apples-to-apples comparison of dose, quantity, channel, coverage or date. The figure is therefore an attributed example, not a current or representative price.

Before changing where a prescription is filled, compare current costs with your own coverage and ask your pharmacist or clinician about any practical implications. The TechCrunch report does not establish current medicine availability, delivery or pickup options, or how the service handles every insurance arrangement.
Why does Cuban say incumbents cannot react as quickly?
Cuban’s advice to founders is, “Don’t be dependent on them.” He argues that avoiding dependence on established insurers and PBMs can let a smaller business move faster. His line, “They can’t react as quickly, and so that’s always going to give the founder an edge,” is his view of the competitive advantage—not a demonstrated rule about every healthcare company.

PBMs, or pharmacy benefit managers, are intermediaries involved in prescription-drug benefits and the relationships among health plans, pharmacies and drug makers. The TechCrunch account presents Cuban’s preference not to depend on established players as part of his strategy; it does not show that the company has eliminated every intermediary or that bypassing one automatically lowers a patient’s cost.
Can manufacturing help with drug shortages?
TechCrunch reported Cuban’s claim that Cost Plus Drugs was building a manufacturing operation in Dallas to address shortages. He described a four-hour turnaround for a new drug. These are reported company claims, not independently verified evidence of the facility’s current status, its production capacity, or how quickly it can supply a medicine in a shortage.

The article also notes limited direct evidence for the suggestion that manufacturers intentionally want shortages. A shortage can have multiple causes; Cuban’s allegation should not be treated as an established explanation. The reporting does not establish that the Dallas operation has resolved any shortage.

Affordability and incentives to develop new medicines are both legitimate policy concerns. A 2021 Brookings analysis by Rena Conti, Richard G. Frank and Jonathan Gruber argues that “the trade-off between prices and innovation need not be this stark and, in fact, is likely avoidable.” The authors discuss policy approaches that combine value-aware pricing with public research investment and other support for innovation.

That is a policy proposal, not evidence that one retailer’s pricing model solves the system-wide balance. Whether a specific policy improves affordability without weakening useful research incentives depends on how it is designed; the Brookings paper does not establish that Cost Plus Drugs itself resolves that question.
What Cuban’s argument does—and does not—show
- It shows his proposed competitive mechanism: make price components visible, sell directly, and reduce dependence on incumbent intermediaries.
- It does not establish universal savings: the reported $21 example lacks the details needed for a like-for-like comparison, and the reported formula is not verified as current.
- It does not establish a completed shortage solution: the Dallas manufacturing account and four-hour turnaround are Cuban’s reported claims.
- It does not settle national drug policy: lower prices and innovation incentives require policy choices beyond any single company’s model.
The useful personal-finance takeaway is to compare the total current cost for the exact prescription and your coverage rather than assume that a transparent price is always the lowest price. Cuban’s broader point is that a founder may gain an edge by building around a different set of incentives; whether that edge translates into durable savings and supply depends on facts the interview does not establish.
