Mark Cuban, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashton Kutcher were among the investors named in contemporaneous coverage. The company later raised more: GeekWire reported $8.5 million in total funding by February 2022.
Who invested in Cloud Paper’s 2020 seed round?
Cloud Paper, founded by University of Washington graduates Ryan Fritsch and Austin Watkins, announced the $3 million seed financing on September 22, 2020. Greycroft led the round. Investor lists differed between the outlets covering it, so names are best read with their source attribution.
- GeekWire named Mark Cuban, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashton Kutcher, Guy Oseary and Hadi Partovi among participants.
- TechCrunch also named Marc Benioff, Robert Downey Jr., Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Russell Wilson, Ciara, Grant Ries, Muse Capital, and Ashley and Marc Merrill.
Co-founder Austin Watkins said the fundraising priority was finding investors “who are passionate about building a tree-free paper movement with us.”
What did Cloud Paper sell?
In 2020, coverage described Cloud Paper as selling bamboo toilet paper to consumers and businesses. GeekWire reported that its direct-to-consumer offer then was a 24-roll box for $28. That is a historical price, not a current quote. The company used plastic-free packaging, according to the 2020 report.

By 2022, Cloud Paper had also added bamboo paper towels. GeekWire described the toilet paper as tree-free and three-ply, and reported that the products had received Forest Stewardship Council certification in 2021. These details describe the company at the time of that report; current product range, specifications, prices and availability are not established here.
How much has Cloud Paper raised?
The 2020 $3 million seed round was not the company’s eventual reported funding total. GeekWire reported in February 2022 that Cloud Paper had raised a further $5 million, bringing its total funding to $8.5 million, including $500,000 in friends-and-family funding and the earlier seed round.

The 2022 report named Bezos Expeditions, TIME Ventures, Jeff Wilke and Ashton Kutcher among backers involved in the later financing, and listed Mark Cuban and Gwyneth Paltrow among other notable investors. It also described an eight-person team and plans to invest in supply chain, product development, hiring, launches and distribution. Those are dated figures and plans, not current company details.
What environmental claims did the company make?
GeekWire reported in August 2020 that Cloud Paper said customers switching to its products, together with the company’s Carbon Fund, had saved and offset more than 1 million pounds of carbon. In its 2022 coverage, GeekWire reported the company’s claim that its products saved more than 10,000 trees in 2021. These are company-reported figures; the cited coverage does not establish independent verification or a full life-cycle assessment.

Tree-free describes the reported fiber source—bamboo—rather than proving that a product has no environmental costs. A fair comparison with other tissue would need to consider fiber source, manufacturing, transport, packaging and disposal, as well as product performance. The available reporting does not support declaring bamboo universally better than recycled-fiber tissue.

The financing and celebrity-investor names document interest in Cloud Paper’s tree-free tissue business at particular points in time. They do not establish the company’s present operating status, current sales channels or current product terms. GeekWire reported an 800% increase in signups during the pandemic in 2020; its 2022 article also carried company-attributed growth figures, including 930% more rolls delivered since the seed round. These dated growth claims should not be treated as current performance measures.
