Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River 2023 was named a 97-point Best in Show wine at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards. Separately, Margaret River won nine of 40 Wine Trophies at the 2025 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), more than any other wine region. IWSC did not name one Margaret River red as the world’s best.
Which Margaret River red was named Best in Show?
Decanter’s 2026 World Wine Awards named Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River 2023 a Best in Show wine, with a score of 97 points. Decanter describes blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, dried-herb complexity, concentrated fruit and a restrained expression; the wine is listed at 14% alcohol. Decanter’s 14 July 2026 report says Margaret River has had 11 wines selected for Best in Show since the selection began in 2015, including five Cabernets.
“Best in Show” is Decanter’s award designation. It is not an IWSC trophy, and the 97-point score belongs to Decanter’s judging context.
What did Margaret River win at IWSC 2025?
The Margaret River Wine Association reported on 19 September 2025 that the region received nine of the IWSC’s 40 Wine Trophies—22.5% of the total and more than any other wine region. The competition considered more than 12,000 wines from over 90 countries for trophies across still, sparkling and fortified categories. The association said 39 Western Australian wines first earned gold medals in regional judging; those wines were then shipped to the UK for final Trophy judging on 11 September 2025. The association’s release lists the trophy winners.

The nine wines were not all reds. The list included four Chardonnays and a Savagnin alongside four red wines:

The full release also names Amato Vino Savagnin Space Girls 2024 (95 points; A$45), Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2024 and 2023 (both 97; A$85 each), Nocturne SV Forrest Chardonnay 2024 (96; A$65), and Happs Three Hills Chardonnay 2023 (95; A$50).

How do the two Cabernet results compare?
Xanadu Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 and Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 are both Margaret River Cabernets from the 2023 vintage, but their awards come from different competitions. Xanadu received IWSC Trophy + Gold and 98 points in 2025; Deep Woods received Decanter Best in Show and 97 points in 2026. Those scores should not be treated as a direct head-to-head ranking: they were awarded in separate judging contexts. The association’s release-era Australian RRP for Xanadu was A$45; no price for Deep Woods is established in the cited Decanter report, and current stock or pricing for either wine has not been verified.

IWSC’s separate 2026 Margaret River judging awarded more than 230 medals to Western Australian wines, including 29 golds. Chardonnay led with more than 90 medals, while Cabernet Sauvignon led the red varieties with more than 60. House of Cards Ace High Chardonnay 2025 scored 100 points; IWSC said it was the first wine to reach the top score since the competition introduced its 100-point system in 2019. IWSC’s 1 September 2026 report covers those results. The 100-point wine is a Chardonnay, not the Decanter Best in Show Cabernet.

IWSC later named House of Cards the winner of its 2026 Western Australian Wine Producer Trophy. That producer award is distinct from the individual wine results and does not change which red wine Decanter named Best in Show. IWSC’s producer-award announcement identifies the winery and award.

What to check before buying an award-winning bottle
- Match the exact wine and vintage. Award claims apply to the named bottle and vintage, not automatically to later releases from the same producer.
- Check the competition and award label. IWSC Trophy + Gold and Decanter Best in Show are different outcomes from different competitions.
- Confirm current availability and price. The association’s listed RRPs are from its 2025 release, not live offers; the cited award reports do not establish present stock, retailer pricing or shipping availability.
