Marc Benioff’s leadership playbook, set out in Trailblazer, is to make a company’s purpose and values part of everyday business decisions—not just a mission statement. Salesforce presents trust as its most important value, while GeekWire’s coverage of the book describes Benioff’s public advocacy on LGBTQ rights, the environment, immigration, and gender pay equity. Those are Benioff’s and Salesforce’s positions, not proof that a purpose-driven approach automatically improves financial performance.

What Benioff’s purpose-driven playbook means

Trailblazer: The Power of Business as the Greatest Platform for Change, by Marc Benioff with Monica Langley, is the book at the center of GeekWire’s report. Its central leadership idea is that a company’s purpose and values should shape its culture and choices, including how it responds to issues beyond its immediate commercial interests. Salesforce’s book page presents the work as a guide to business growth, innovation, and a purpose-driven career; GeekWire describes Benioff’s account of becoming an activist on social and environmental issues.

That is a leadership proposition, not a demonstrated formula for higher profits or better performance. A company can state admirable values and still face difficult trade-offs in how it treats customers, employees, communities, and investors. The useful question for a reader is whether the values actually influence decisions—and whether the company explains the results honestly.

Which values Salesforce says guide it

Salesforce’s current public culture material names five core values: trust, customer success, innovation, equality, and sustainability. The company says its responsibilities extend to customers, employees, partners, communities, the planet, and society. These are Salesforce’s own descriptions of its culture and priorities, rather than an independent assessment of how consistently it meets them. Salesforce Trailhead: Learn About Salesforce Values

How to turn values into operating choices with V2MOM

Salesforce describes V2MOM—Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, and Measures—as a framework for clarifying direction and aligning work. In a December 11, 2024 article, Benioff explains the five elements and offers prompts for applying them. The framework’s value is practical: it makes leaders spell out how an aspiration becomes work, what could get in the way, and how progress will be judged. Salesforce: V2MOM framework

  1. Vision: State the outcome the organization is trying to achieve. A useful vision is clear enough that teams can tell whether a proposed action advances it.
  2. Values: Identify the principles that should guide decisions. Leaders should also address conflicts between values—for example, when a short-term choice that helps one stakeholder could harm another.
  3. Methods: Name the actions and approaches that will move the organization toward its vision. Values become more than slogans when they shape these methods.
  4. Obstacles: Identify barriers, competing priorities, and risks before they derail execution. Naming an obstacle makes it possible to assign responsibility for addressing it.
  5. Measures: Choose evidence that can show whether the methods are working and the vision is being reached. Measures should be relevant to the stated goal rather than selected only because they make progress look favorable.

Salesforce also offers a Trailhead lesson on V2MOM. Because the framework is presented by Salesforce itself, it is best treated as the company’s management approach—not as independent evidence that it outperforms other planning methods.

How to evaluate a purpose-driven leadership claim

Readers considering Benioff’s approach can use V2MOM’s five elements as a scrutiny checklist. Apply it to a company’s public commitments or to a leadership decision you are assessing:

  • Vision: Is the intended outcome specific enough to guide choices?
  • Values: Are the principles named, and does leadership explain how it handles conflicts among them?
  • Methods: Are there concrete actions tied to the commitment, or only broad statements of intent?
  • Obstacles: Does the company acknowledge costs, resistance, or competing interests?
  • Measures: Is progress assessed with relevant evidence, and are setbacks disclosed as well as successes?

This approach distinguishes a company’s stated purpose from the evidence that it is being put into practice. It also avoids assuming that advocacy or a values statement, by itself, establishes a financial result.
