DeepSeek changed perceptions about the cost, openness, and accessibility of frontier AI models. Manus primarily packaged existing models, tools, browsing, code execution, and a virtual computer into a consumer-facing agent.
That distinction matters for investors, businesses, and technology readers. Manus may have helped prove that autonomous AI work could become a valuable commercial category. It did not, based on the public evidence, create a comparable foundation-model or ecosystem shock.

What made DeepSeek a “moment”?
The phrase should mean more than “a Chinese AI product went viral.” DeepSeek’s impact came from several developments arriving together:

- Highly capable language and reasoning models from a Chinese research organization.
- Technical reporting that gave researchers meaningful information to inspect.
- Model artifacts and inference code released under permissive terms for cited releases.
- Strong apparent capability at unusually low inference costs.
- A challenge to assumptions about the computing power, capital, and proprietary infrastructure required to compete at the frontier.
- Effects that reached model developers, cloud providers, chip companies, open-source communities, and investors.
DeepSeek’s V3 technical report describes a 671-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 37 billion parameters activated per token. DeepSeek’s model-disclosure page says it releases weights, parameters, and inference code under the MIT License, although “open” does not mean every training detail, dataset, or corporate process is public.

In short, DeepSeek’s shock was primarily about the model and training system, its economics, and the ecosystem built around those artifacts.
What Manus launched
Manus presented itself as a general-purpose AI agent rather than a conventional chatbot. Its product pitch emphasized carrying out multi-step work: researching online, browsing websites, writing reports, creating presentations and websites, handling files, coding, and operating a cloud-based virtual computer. Its official product page describes that execution-oriented approach.
The important product shift was from:
- Chatbots: provide answers or generate content in response to prompts.
- Agents: plan and execute a sequence of actions using tools, software, files, and websites.
Manus attempted to combine language models, browser automation, code execution, virtual machines, task planning, and a polished interface into one workflow. That could be commercially important even if the underlying foundation model was not novel.

Manus appeared shortly after DeepSeek’s global breakout and was associated with Chinese founders and engineering talent. Its launch also produced the ingredients of a viral technology story: invitation scarcity, social-media demonstrations, enthusiastic commentary, and a perceived leap from answering questions to completing work.
Contemporary reporting said Manus’s Discord community surpassed 138,000 members within days and that invitation codes were reportedly resold for thousands of dollars. The company also claimed strong performance on parts of the GAIA benchmark. TechCrunch reported these launch claims and the resulting attention, while Axios described the concern about another Chinese AI advance.
Those facts establish intense interest. They do not establish a new model architecture, lower frontier-model costs, or durable technical superiority.
What Manus may have proved
At its strongest, the Manus launch demonstrated that a small team could assemble an appealing agentic workflow around available models and infrastructure. It may have shown:
- Demand for AI that produces deliverables rather than merely text.
- The value of giving an agent a persistent virtual computer.
- A practical way to coordinate browsing, coding, file manipulation, and content generation.
- A potential subscription and credit-based business model for autonomous work.
- That the application layer between foundation models and business software could itself be strategically valuable.
That is a meaningful claim. It is simply a different claim from “we changed the economics of frontier models.”

What Manus did not prove
The public launch evidence did not prove that Manus:
- Developed a new frontier foundation model.
- Could reliably operate autonomously in messy real-world environments.
- Generalized benchmark performance to ordinary users.
- Was consistently better than competing agent systems.
- Could operate economically at scale without expensive model calls or human supervision.
- Represented a second foundational AI breakthrough for China.
Early hands-on coverage found both impressive demonstrations and practical problems. A Bloomberg Law review described glitches, crashes, broken links, and difficulty with tasks including restaurant reservations and online shopping. Individual tests are not a statistically representative evaluation, but they illustrate the gap between a compelling demo and dependable automation.
Why the GAIA claim needs caution
Manus reportedly claimed that it outperformed OpenAI’s Deep Research on parts of GAIA, a benchmark for general AI assistants. That should be treated as a narrow company claim unless the exact score, GAIA version, task split, tools, prompts, retry policy, and human-intervention rules are independently verified under comparable conditions.
Agent benchmarks measure a particular combination of planning, tool use, browsing, code execution, and answer production. They do not provide a universal ranking of intelligence. The 2026 Stanford AI Index notes rapid improvement on agent benchmarks, including GAIA, which makes any early lead especially time-sensitive.
A system can score well by using better tools, more retries, or a more effective workflow without having a fundamentally better base model. Conversely, a benchmark score may fail to capture reliability, safety, latency, cost, and recovery from mistakes.
Model versus system: the central distinction

A useful analogy is that DeepSeek challenged the economics of the engine, while Manus tried to build a more useful vehicle and driver from engines and tools available in the market. A better vehicle can be extremely valuable without being a new engine.
The commercial story became stronger
Later developments support the argument that Manus was commercially significant. In December 2025, Manus reported $100 million in annual recurring revenue and a $125 million revenue run rate. Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited results. The company also reported processing more than 147 trillion tokens and creating more than 80 million virtual computers; those figures should likewise be attributed to Manus.
Meta announced in December 2025 that Manus was joining the company. Media reports estimated the transaction at roughly $2 billion to $3 billion, but Meta did not disclose the financial terms in the cited public announcement. Meta said Manus was serving millions of users and businesses and that its technology would be integrated across Meta’s consumer and business products, including Meta AI. The Associated Press covered the transaction and reported deal estimates.

This is evidence of strategic and commercial value. It is not evidence that Manus created a DeepSeek-scale model breakthrough, nor does an acquisition price independently validate every technical or financial claim.
The China question is more complicated than the label
Calling Manus simply “Chinese AI” is imprecise. A more accurate description is that it was founded by Chinese entrepreneurs and engineers, initially operated from China, later moved its headquarters and core operations to Singapore, and was acquired by Meta in December 2025 before Chinese authorities reportedly blocked the transaction in April 2026.
Those developments separate several questions:
- Where did the founders originate?
- Where was the engineering talent located?
- Where was the company incorporated?
- Where were its servers, users, and operations?
- Who owned the intellectual property and equity?
- Which government had regulatory jurisdiction?
Meta said after the announced acquisition that there would be no continuing Chinese ownership interests and that Manus would discontinue its China operations, according to AP reporting. But the precise consequences of China’s reported intervention for ownership, staffing, data, intellectual property, and operations should not be overstated without a regulator’s original notice and definitive follow-up disclosures.
Why the reported regulatory intervention matters
According to AP reporting, Chinese authorities blocked Meta’s acquisition in April 2026 over concerns about the transfer of advanced technology. TechCrunch and other reporting put the proposed deal’s value in the roughly $2 billion range.
That turns Manus into more than a product story. It becomes a case study in whether Chinese-origin AI companies can globalize through Singaporean incorporation, foreign investment, and sale to U.S. technology companies.
The episode may signal that the most valuable asset is not always a model. It can be a team, an orchestration system, proprietary workflows, customer relationships, or the ability to turn general-purpose models into a usable product. Those assets can still trigger technology-transfer concerns even when the company is no longer headquartered in mainland China.

Agents can follow stale pages, misread forms, click the wrong controls, stop before completing a task, create plausible but inaccurate reports, repeat failed actions, and consume credits without producing a useful result.

- Task completion rate.
- Factual accuracy.
- Human intervention required.
- Time to a successful result.
- Credit or API cost per successful task.
- Recovery after a website or tool changes.
- Audit logs and permission controls.
- What happens when the system is uncertain.
Feature count is not the same as reliability. Manus has continued adding browser operation, connectors, projects, design tools, and other integrations through its product updates. The relevant question is whether those additions make important work more dependable, affordable, and auditable.
Privacy and cost are part of the technology question
An agent may access email, calendars, cloud drives, browser sessions, source code, and commerce workflows. Before connecting sensitive accounts, users should check where data is stored, whether prompts and outputs may be used for training, how permissions work, how data is deleted, and what happens to user information during a change in ownership.
Manus has a help-center explanation of ownership for generated websites, images, videos, and slides. Users should rely on the current terms rather than infer ownership from marketing language.

Agent pricing can also obscure the true cost. Subscriptions may include credits, model-specific usage, concurrency limits, premium features, or connected-service charges. Manus’s current materials describe Free, Pro, and Team plans, but plan names, entitlements, and pricing can change. Earlier 2025 reporting described paid plans beginning at $39 per month and a higher $199 tier; those figures should not be treated as current pricing.
A practical way to judge an AI agent
Instead of asking which product produced the most spectacular launch demo, run the same five tasks across competing systems:
- Produce a cited comparison of three products.
- Turn a spreadsheet into a presentation.
- Build and publish a simple landing page.
- Research a trip without making purchases.
- Modify a small code project and explain every change.
Score each system for successful completion, accuracy, intervention, time, recoverability, and total cost. This framework is more useful to a business than a viral benchmark claim because it measures the outcome the buyer actually wants.
Verdict
Manus was not a second DeepSeek moment in the foundational-model sense. DeepSeek released model technology and technical artifacts that challenged assumptions about AI economics and accessibility. Manus primarily delivered an application-layer system designed to make agents useful.
