A former Harvey Norman employee in Mandurah avoided immediate imprisonment after admitting to stealing A$5,049 from her employer through refund transactions, according to a February 2024 report. The sentence included seven months in prison conditionally suspended for 12 months on two charges, plus community service and reparations on the remaining charges.
What happened at the Mandurah store?
PerthNow’s Mandurah Times report, published 21 February 2024, said Donna Lee Pittman, then 41, was sentenced at Mandurah Magistrates Court on 16 February 2024 after admitting to 12 charges of stealing as a servant. The report said the thefts totalled A$5,049 and took place between 6 March 2022 and 23 September 2023. The money was taken through refunds, not by stealing merchandise. How the refunds were processed
According to the report’s account of police prosecutor Sgt Naomi Foster’s summary to the court, Pittman processed 11 EFTPOS refunds to cards she owned and one cash refund. Four refunds were processed soon after a customer purchase, and in-store CCTV captured her twice.
What sentence did she receive?
The report said Magistrate Leanne Atkins imposed seven months’ imprisonment, conditionally suspended for 12 months, for two charges involving A$1,290 on 24 March 2023 and A$1,271 on 6 September 2023. For the other charges, Pittman was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and pay A$1,734 in reparations.

“Avoids immediate prison time” means the prison term was suspended on conditions; it does not mean there was no prison sentence. The report said the magistrate would have imposed prison time on all charges but was limited because the amount for each of the other charges was not more than A$1,000. That is the news report’s account of the magistrate’s explanation in this case, not general guidance on how Western Australian sentencing law applies.
What was said about the circumstances?
The report attributed to defence lawyer Kanesthorn Anamwong that Pittman had gambling debts and rental arrears, felt remorse and had intended to repay the money. The lawyer said she had repaid A$1,015 by the sentencing date. The report also said she was unemployed and receiving a single-parent Centrelink payment, had sought help for addictive behaviour, was trying to organise her finances and had spent two weeks at Shalom House. These details were presented through the defence and the report, rather than as independently verified findings.

The report quoted Magistrate Atkins describing the conduct as a “serious example of stealing as a servant” and saying: “That is an appalling breach of trust on your behalf.” She also said, “You stole to try to clear gambling debts.” The article reported that the magistrate said Pittman had betrayed colleagues who treated her as family and that the store manager had been “totally destroyed” and no longer wanted contact.
