Harbor Freight generally allows returns for a refund or exchange within 90 days of purchase, but you need proof of purchase and some items have shorter windows or special restrictions. Return options also depend on whether you bought in a store or online, and shipping charges are not refunded.
How long do you have to return something?
Harbor Freight’s general return period is 90 days from purchase for a refund or exchange. You must provide proof of purchase, and a restocking fee may apply to some items. The policy is not an unconditional guarantee: Harbor Freight’s instructions say, “A Harbor Freight manager has the right to refuse returns of any item at any time for any reason even if you have a receipt.” See the official Return Policy and Returning an Item instructions for current terms.
What proof and identification do you need?
- Store purchase: Bring the item and its receipt.
- Online purchase returned in a store: Bring the original packing slip.
- Identification: In-store returns require valid government-issued photo ID and/or other identifying information.
Harbor Freight’s terms and conditions also require proof of purchase and identifying information.
How do you return an item bought online?
Online purchases may be returned in a Harbor Freight store or by mail, subject to item restrictions. Online-exclusive products cannot be returned in store.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a return the same as a warranty claim?
No. A return is a request for a refund or exchange under the return rules. If an item is defective or fails, its warranty may provide a separate route for repair, replacement, or other coverage under different terms. Harbor Freight describes a limited 90-day warranty for defects and a lifetime hand-tool warranty, each with its own conditions and limitations. Check the item’s warranty information or Harbor Freight’s Warranty Information if the problem is a defect or failure.
