Malwarebytes did offer legitimate replacement licenses to some users of pirated, counterfeit, abused, or invalidated keys—but only as part of a limited-time program announced on June 29, 2015. The standard route for users who admitted downloading a questionable key was generally reported as 12 months of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, not a permanent lifetime license. There is no current evidence that the old Amnesty offer remains available in 2026.
What Malwarebytes announced in 2015
The program concerned Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, commonly called MBAM Premium at the time. Contemporary reports described an “Amnesty” campaign intended to move users onto legitimate licenses while Malwarebytes replaced its older licensing system.

The campaign addressed several groups:
- Users who had obtained keys from the Internet, key generators, or cracks.
- Users holding counterfeit reseller keys.
- Users whose keys had been duplicated or flagged as abused.
- Legitimate customers whose valid keys might have collided with pirated copies.
Users were reportedly asked to distinguish between a key they had purchased and one whose origin was uncertain or clearly unauthorized. The offer was time-limited; contemporary coverage did not establish a precise closing date.

Computerworld’s June 29, 2015 report described the questionable-key route as a legitimate replacement key providing one year of Premium service. TorrentFreak reported the same basic arrangement and explained the company’s reasoning.

Why Malwarebytes offered replacements instead of simply blocking keys
The central problem was technical as well as commercial. Malwarebytes said its older key-generation system was insecure and could create collisions between legitimate and pirated keys. In practice, a pirated or duplicated key could be identical to one purchased by a paying customer.
Blocking every compromised key would therefore risk disabling genuine customers. A licensing-system migration gave Malwarebytes a reason to separate legitimate users from abused keys and issue replacements rather than relying only on blanket deactivation.
The business rationale was pragmatic. Malwarebytes reportedly recognized that not every person using an unauthorized copy would become a paying customer if threatened with enforcement. Offering a temporary legitimate license could repair the licensing problem, improve goodwill, and potentially convert some users into subscribers later. That does not mean the company formally endorsed piracy; it means the campaign was designed as a licensing-remediation strategy rather than a purely punitive action.

Not as the general official rule. The strongest contemporary reporting described the pirate-admission route as 12 months of Premium access. Computerworld reported that users would then face the company’s subscription model, citing a 2015 price of $24.95 for one year and three PCs. That was a 2015 price and is not a current Malwarebytes price.

Some users on contemporary forums claimed that people who selected an “I purchased my key” option received lifetime replacement keys. Discussions on LowEndTalk and Boards.ie repeated claims about lifetime outcomes and described attempts to submit multiple keys or make false purchase declarations.
Those posts are useful evidence of what users reported seeing, but they are not proof that Malwarebytes universally promised lifetime licenses to people with counterfeit keys. The safest historical distinction is:

Could the program be abused?
Contemporary forum discussions alleged that users submitted multiple keys, deactivated and reactivated installations, or falsely claimed to have purchased keys. Other users said repeated submissions stopped working or that keys were rejected after Malwarebytes changed the system.
These reports should not be confused with the program’s intended terms. More importantly, reproducing key-generation methods, counterfeit keys, activation workarounds, or submission tricks would turn a historical explanation into instructions for software piracy. None of those methods is a legitimate way to obtain Malwarebytes protection today.

Is the Malwarebytes Amnesty program still available?
There is no current evidence that the 2015 Amnesty campaign remains active. The old campaign belonged to the MBAM Premium licensing era, and current Malwarebytes support documentation now describes account-linked subscriptions, license registration, and MB codes rather than the old standalone key workflow.
Old links may redirect, disappear, or no longer accept submissions. An archived forum post promising a free or lifetime key should therefore be treated as historical information, not as a current offer. Current product names, plans, device coverage, and billing arrangements also cannot be assumed to match the 2015 MBAM Premium system.
What legitimate owners of an old key should do now
- Do not use a crack or key generator. An activating key is not necessarily legitimate, and unauthorized software can create security and licensing risks.
- Install Malwarebytes from an official source. For Windows, use the official installation guidance; use official app stores for supported mobile platforms.
- Try registering a genuine purchase. Malwarebytes explains how to add a license to a Malwarebytes account.
- Recover the original purchase details. Check the purchase email, receipt, reseller record, or account. Malwarebytes also provides guidance on finding a license key.
- Contact official support if activation fails. Provide proof of purchase where available. A rejected legacy key may have been duplicated, invalidated, or affected by the licensing migration.
A key purchased from an unauthorized reseller should not be assumed valid merely because it once activated the software. Counterfeit and duplicated keys can later be disabled.

Today, Malwarebytes offers current security products and subscriptions rather than the old MBAM Premium key arrangement. Its Premium Security product page describes protection across supported Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices, although features vary by operating system and plan.

Malwarebytes’ current activation process directs customers to sign in, link licenses to accounts, or enter an MB code. The company’s subscription activation instructions reflect that account-based model.
The current free product is primarily positioned for scanning and cleanup. According to Malwarebytes’ free-versus-paid feature guide, real-time protection and several active defenses require a paid plan.
As of 2026, Malwarebytes’ pricing pages present Standard, Plus, and Ultimate tiers, along with Individual, Family, and business options. The product page advertises a 60-day money-back guarantee. A separate renewal page has displayed a $24.95 annual figure alongside a crossed-out price, but that appears to be a renewal or targeted offer—not a universal current retail price. Readers should check the current pricing page for the terms available to them.
Common misconceptions
“Every pirate received a free lifetime license.”
That overstates the evidence. The reported standard pirate route was one year, while lifetime results were associated with user reports and possible use of the purchased-key branch.

“Malwarebytes rewarded piracy.”
The more accurate description is a temporary licensing-repair program. Malwarebytes was trying to migrate a compromised key system without unfairly disabling legitimate customers whose keys might collide with pirated ones.
“The free keys are still available.”
Current Malwarebytes pages do not present the Amnesty campaign as an active promotion or support route. The current legitimate options are the official free tier, any applicable trial, or a paid subscription.
“2015 MBAM Premium and current Malwarebytes Premium Security are the same product.”
They are not interchangeable. The modern product family uses different plans, account workflows, supported platforms, and feature groupings.
