You can make money typing through transcription, captioning, translation, and client-requested document work—but a listed task rate is not the same as your hourly earnings. Audio-based pay is often calculated per minute or hour of recording, while your actual work time also includes listening, correcting, formatting, and meeting quality requirements. Here are 13 typing-related services to investigate, with verified platform roles separated from ideas to pitch to clients. Check each provider’s official site for current openings, eligibility, location, and available work before applying.
13 typing jobs and services to explore
The first five options below are roles described on platform pages cited here. The other eight are client-sourced service ideas, not confirmed openings: look for project demand, agree on scope and price directly, and do not assume a typical rate or steady work.
1. General transcription
Transcribe spoken audio or video into text, or correct an automated transcript. Rev lists transcriptionist pay at $0.40–$1.10 per audio/video minute; Scribie lists $5–$20 per audio hour; TranscribeMe advertises starting rates of $15–$22 per audio hour. These are platform-published rates tied to recorded audio, not guaranteed wages for each hour you work. The time required to listen, correct, format, and satisfy quality checks affects your effective hourly earnings.
Entry steps and conditions differ. Rev says applicants complete a skills assessment and sample, and its freelancer page currently reports a waitlist due to high application volume. Scribie describes correcting automated transcripts and applying context. TranscribeMe advertises average monthly earnings of $250, a company figure rather than independent labor-market data or a promise of income. Confirm current application status, work availability, payment terms, and eligibility on each provider’s page.

2. Captioning
Create captions for video, which may involve transcribing speech and aligning text with the relevant timing. Rev lists captioning as a separate freelance role and requires a role-specific assessment and sample. The cited page does not establish a typical captioning rate, so check the live listing rather than assuming transcription rates apply.
3. Subtitle translation
Translate subtitles between languages while preserving meaning and timing. Rev lists subtitle translation among its freelance roles and says language opportunities vary with project demand. Applicants complete a relevant assessment and sample. Verify that your language pair is currently available; the cited page does not establish a rate or guarantee projects.
4. Medical transcription
Transcribe recordings that use medical terminology. TranscribeMe identifies medical work as a specialist-team opportunity. This is not presented as a guaranteed entry-level assignment: check the platform’s current qualifications and selection requirements, and be realistic about the domain knowledge and accuracy the work calls for.
5. Other specialist transcription
Specialty teams may handle subject-specific vocabulary and formatting. TranscribeMe advertises $60–$70+ per audio hour for special teams, but this is a platform-published specialist rate, not an entry-level guarantee, an elapsed-hour wage, or a promise of acceptance or work volume. Verify qualifications and availability directly with the provider.

6. Data cleanup
Offer to standardize or tidy client-provided text and records—for example, correcting inconsistent capitalization or spacing. Treat this as a service to pitch, not a verified job listing. Agree in advance on what files you will handle, what counts as complete, and how the client will review the work.
7. Document formatting
Format documents to a client’s stated requirements, such as consistent headings, spacing, or page layout. Ask for a sample or style guide and define the deliverable before beginning. No typical rate or current opening is established for this service.
8. Proofreading
Review client documents for typos, spelling, and consistency. Distinguish proofreading from substantive editing, and clarify whether the client expects tracked changes, a clean copy, or both. This is a service idea, not a verified job opportunity.
9. Virtual-assistant typing tasks
Some virtual-assistant work can include typing emails, updating records, or preparing routine documents. Search for roles with specific duties and verify the employer independently. A typing component does not establish that a role is available, legitimate, or paid at a particular rate.

10. Writing
Offer client-requested writing, such as drafting or revising short documents, if you have the relevant skills. Agree on the assignment, research expectations, revision limits, and ownership terms before accepting. The cited platform sources do not establish current writing openings or typical prices.
11. Meeting-note preparation
Turn client-provided notes or recordings into an organized document if the client has authorized you to handle the material. Confirm the format and whether the task involves transcription, summarizing, or both; they are different deliverables.
12. Data entry
Enter information into a client’s specified system or template. Clarify the source data, required fields, and accuracy checks. Be especially cautious with unsolicited work-from-home data-entry offers: the FTC warns that scammers use such pitches, including promises of quick money for little work.
13. Document conversion and retyping
Retype or reorganize client-provided material into a requested document format. Confirm that the client has the right to provide the material and specify how the finished file should be delivered. This is a potential freelance service, not a verified opening or an established source of regular income.

| Rev transcription | $0.40–$1.10 per audio/video minute, listed by Rev | Assessment and sample; Rev’s page currently reports a waitlist |
| Scribie transcription | $5–$20 per audio hour, listed by Scribie | Correct automated transcripts; computer, internet, English comprehension, and headphones or a headset listed as requirements |

| Client-sourced service ideas | Not stated in the cited sources | Find and pitch clients; negotiate scope and price for each project |
Audio-minute and audio-hour rates measure the length of the recording, not the time you spend completing it. A one-hour recording can take longer than an hour to process, and corrections or formatting add work. Client-set project prices also need to be considered against the time and revision scope involved. None of the cited platform rates establishes a guaranteed workload, acceptance, or take-home hourly wage.
What you need to get started
For transcription, Scribie lists a laptop or desktop computer, an internet connection, English comprehension, and headphones or a headset. The cited page does not require or endorse a particular model. Before investing in equipment, read the provider’s current requirements. A headset is one listed requirement; the sources do not establish that a more expensive setup increases earnings.
For client-sourced work, prepare a clear description of the service you offer and examples you are allowed to share. Set expectations about file formats, deadlines, revisions, confidentiality, and payment before starting. Do not promise capabilities or turnaround times you cannot meet.
How to start safely
- Choose a service that matches your skills. Decide whether you want listening-based transcription, caption timing, subtitle translation, specialist vocabulary, or client-sourced document work.
- Check the official provider page. Confirm live hiring status, location and language eligibility, payment method, assessment steps, and whether tasks are currently available. Platform details can change.
- Assess the rate unit. Find out whether compensation is per audio minute, audio hour, completed task, or client-priced project. Estimate how long the full job—including review and formatting—will take before judging whether the work suits you.
- Complete only legitimate selection steps. Rev describes an assessment and sample; Rev also currently reports a waitlist. Follow the provider’s own application instructions and avoid paying for access to a job.
- Agree on client work in writing. Define the deliverable, price, deadline, revision limits, and payment arrangement before doing a project. Keep copies of the agreed terms.
- Track actual time and payment. Record time spent on listening, typing, corrections, and revisions alongside what you are paid. That gives you a more useful picture of your own effective earnings than an audio-based rate alone.
How to spot a typing-job scam
The Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers advertise home-based data-entry and other side tasks, promise quick money for little work, create pressure to act, or demand payment for training or access. Its guidance is direct: “No legitimate gig will make you pay for expenses, training, or anything else to get the job.” The FTC also warns about fake remote openings that seek sensitive information or send a check and ask you to return part of the money.

- Do not pay an upfront fee for a job, training, or access to tasks.
- Be wary of unusually high pay promises for little work or pressure to act immediately.
- Verify the employer using contact information you find independently on the company’s official site; do not rely only on a recruiter’s supplied phone number or email.
- Do not send money back from a check you received for a purported job.
- Do not provide sensitive personal or financial information until you have independently verified the employer and the offer.
The FTC reported that job-scam losses increased more than threefold from 2020 to 2023 and topped $220 million in the first half of 2024. Those figures cover job scams broadly, not typing jobs specifically.
