What Tesla actually said about a more affordable model
Tesla’s Q2 2025 investor update said: “We continue to expand our vehicle offering, including first builds of a more affordable model in June, with volume production planned for the second half of 2025.” The statement did not identify the vehicle, give a price, or say that customers could order or take delivery of it. That distinction matters: a first build is not the same as a retail launch, and a plan for volume production is not proof that a car is orderable or being delivered. Tesla’s Q1 2024 investor materials had also referred to “new vehicles, including more affordable models” using current manufacturing lines; that was a plan, not a confirmed $25,000 vehicle. How the lower-priced Model 3 and Model Y compared in October 2025
The Associated Press reported on October 7, 2025, that Tesla had introduced lower-priced versions of the Model 3 and Model Y in the United States. Its reported starting prices were:

Why the promised $25,000 car is still a different claim
Reuters reported in April 2024 that Tesla had retreated from more ambitious plans for an all-new vehicle expected to cost $25,000, while promising new models based on current platforms and production lines. “Model 2” is sometimes used as shorthand in coverage of the anticipated affordable Tesla, but the cited Tesla updates do not give the affordable model that name. Treat it as an unofficial nickname, not a confirmed product designation.

What to verify before treating a Tesla as a $25,000 purchase
- Market and date: A price reported for the United States in October 2025 does not establish what a buyer will pay in another country or today.
- Order status: Look for a vehicle listed as orderable, not merely described as planned, built in a first batch, or expected to enter volume production.
- Out-the-door cost: Confirm the current vehicle price and any applicable taxes, fees, options, and incentives. Do not assume a tax credit or other incentive is included in a quoted starting price.
- Trim and equipment: Compare the actual configuration and included features; a lower-priced version may omit equipment found on other trims.
