In June 2008, Dallas colocation provider Colo4Dallas reported a major expansion: it bought its existing building at 3000 Irving Boulevard and the adjacent 3004 Irving Boulevard, and had also leased 40,000 square feet in a nearby Level 3 data center. The company said its total data-center space would rise from 28,000 to 106,000 square feet. These are historical plans and figures, not current facility specifications.

What Colo4Dallas added in June 2008

Rich Miller’s June 30, 2008, DataCenterKnowledge report described three elements of the expansion:

  • Colo4Dallas purchased its then-current facility at 3000 Irving Boulevard.
  • It purchased the adjacent 3004 Irving Boulevard for expansion.
  • In May 2008, it had leased 40,000 square feet of data-center space at a nearby Level 3 facility.

The additional building and leased space were distinct parts of the move: one added a property next to the original site, while the other provided space in a separate nearby facility.

How much space the expansion represented

DataCenterKnowledge reported that Colo4Dallas’s total data-center space increased from 28,000 to 106,000 square feet. The company had occupied the original 3000 Irving site since 2000 and had filled about 90 percent of its space there, according to the report. The 106,000-square-foot figure describes the reported total associated with the 2008 expansion; it should not be read as a current capacity figure.

Why the company expanded

Colo4Dallas President Paul VanMeter distinguished floor-space occupancy from power availability at the original building. As quoted in the 2008 article, he said: “I think it is also important to note that as we reach 100% capacity of 3000 Irving Blvd we are only at 50% capacity of power.” He contrasted that with facilities that have room but not enough power for additional cabinets, and said he expected existing customers to need more power in their current cabinets over time.

Those comments explain the company’s stated rationale at the time: customer demand for power could grow even when the building still had power capacity available. The figures are VanMeter’s reported 2008 characterization, not an independent or current measurement.

Planned power and fit-out at 3004 Irving

A contemporaneous DatacenterDynamics report said the connected 3004 Irving facility was to begin with planned initial power of 7.5 MW, with room for power growth. This was a planned provision reported in 2008, not a current rating.

DataCenterKnowledge also reported that VanMeter told the Dallas Business Journal the company expected to spend about $8 million equipping 3004 Irving. The planned work included raised floors, high-density power capacity, environmental controls, and security controls. The amount was an announced expectation, not a verified final project cost.

What later company history does—and does not—establish

TierPoint’s 2016 company announcement traces its roots to Dallas and identifies Colo4Dallas as its first data-center acquisition in 2010. It describes the original facility as 68,000 square feet, built in 2000, and among the area’s first to provide 2N power. That later account provides corporate-history context, but it does not establish who owns or operates both Irving Boulevard properties today.

A colo.exchange directory listing includes Colo4Dallas at 3000 Irving Boulevard. A directory entry alone does not confirm current ownership, operator, active capacity, or operating status at 3000 or 3004 Irving Boulevard.
