What did “cloud-native” mean in this announcement?
In the cloud-gaming model described by GamesBeat, a game is computed in internet-connected data centers and delivered to the player as video. That approach could make a demanding game accessible on a range of screens, including low-end laptops, desktop gaming PCs, mobile devices, and TVs. Mainframe’s ambition was not simply to stream a conventional game: CEO Thor Gunnarsson described building a runtime targeted at the cloud.
The studio argued that cloud-targeted development could support larger player populations and greater storage. Those were product aspirations, not independently demonstrated performance results. Investor Andreessen Horowitz later outlined examples of what it believed cloud-native design might enable, including interactions between spectators and players, real-time content generation, and personalized onboarding through URLs. These examples express the investor’s thesis rather than a confirmed feature list for Mainframe’s game. Andreessen Horowitz’s 2021 announcement set out that view.
What happened after the initial financing?
In November 2021, Andreessen Horowitz announced that it was leading Mainframe’s Series B and that general partner Jonathan Lai would join the studio’s board. Coverage differed slightly on the reported size:

Game Developer’s 2021 coverage said the MMO was still unnamed and described plans to support mobile, PC, and console. It also reported Mainframe’s interest in Unreal Engine 5 and spectator participation. They do not establish whether the studio is operating today, whether the MMO is still in development, or whether it has been released.
