What the Emmett Patch-Pocket jeans are
Madewell describes the Emmett as “full-length jeans [that] have wide legs, a high, fitted waist and patch pockets in front.” The NY011 listing is part of the Emmett collection and identifies the front patch pockets as a defining design detail.
The displayed standard listing gives a 10 7/8-inch rise, a 19-inch leg opening and a 31-inch inseam. Those measurements describe that listing, not every wash or length option; the exact product page can differ by variant.
Fabric and stretch
For the displayed NY011 item, Madewell specifies premium Cone denim with 91% cotton, 6% recycled polyester and 3% elastane. That blend includes stretch, so these are not rigid, all-cotton jeans. The composition and fabric features may vary among wash-specific listings, so check the selected wash’s product details rather than assuming every Emmett version uses the same blend.

Choosing standard, petite or tall
Madewell describes standard as designed for people 5’4"–5’8" and lists a 30–32-inch inseam range for that length guidance. Petite has a proportional rise and is two inches shorter than standard; tall is three inches longer than standard. These are the brand’s length descriptions, not guarantees of where the hem will fall on every body.
Nordstrom’s separate tall listing reports a 34-inch inseam, 19-inch leg opening and 11-inch front rise. That listing-specific rise differs from Madewell’s displayed standard measurement, so do not treat one retailer’s numbers as universal across all lengths and washes.

- Petite: The shorter length and proportional rise may better suit a shorter frame, but the final hem position still depends on proportions and shoes.
- Tall: The longer option adds length; Nordstrom’s tall listing gives a 34-inch inseam for its variant.
Because the leg opening is wide, the full-length cut is intended to retain a broad silhouette down to the hem. Consider whether you want the hem to skim or cover your shoes when comparing inseams; the available facts do not establish one ideal shoe pairing.
Does the fit run true to size?
There is no single fit answer supported across all wearers. Nordstrom labels its tall listing true to size and showed 4.6 out of 5 from five ratings when accessed in 2026. That is a small, listing-specific rating sample, not a representative fit study.

Rent the Runway displayed 132 reviews and a fit summary favoring true to size. Its member comments include praise for comfort and stretch, as well as reports of a tight waist, an overall loose feel and denim becoming baggy by the end of the day. One reviewer suggested sizing down when between sizes; that is one person’s experience, not a general sizing rule.
For a practical choice, start with the size you normally wear in similar high-rise, stretch denim, then use the retailer’s current size chart and return terms. If your waist and hip measurements fall across different sizes, or you strongly prefer a snug fit, the varied customer feedback is a reason to assess the exact listing’s fit notes rather than assume that sizing up or down will work for everyone.

Care instructions
Madewell labels the displayed item machine washable and says to turn it inside out and wash cold with like colors. Nordstrom’s tall listing says machine wash and tumble dry. Since care directions can vary by specific garment, follow the care label on the pair you receive if it differs from a retailer’s general listing.
