Circana’s U.S. chart, as reported by GamesBeat on October 11, 2024, ranked Madden NFL 25 first for August. EA Sports College Football 25 was second. The next three entries were Star Wars: Outlaws, the EA Sports MVP Bundle, and Elden Ring.

GamesBeat’s report of Circana’s August chart says Madden also ranked first on the PlayStation and Xbox platform-specific lists. In that sense, Madden “swept” the overall chart and those two platform charts; the report does not establish that it led every platform list.
Why did Madden NFL 25 top August sales?
The chart result coincided with the NFL game’s release month. GamesBeat reported that Madden topped the sales chart in its release month for the 25th consecutive year. That is a recurring release-month pattern, not evidence that Madden led every month or outsold every game by copies.

The result also came amid strong sales positions for two EA football products: Madden ranked first, and EA Sports College Football 25—which had led in July—ranked second. The EA Sports MVP Bundle, which included both games, placed fourth. Because a combined bundle also appeared on the chart, the rankings alone cannot show how much of its sales should be attributed to either standalone game.
What does the sales ranking measure?
The reported chart ranks dollar sales, combining physical sales and full-game digital sales for publishers participating in Circana’s Digital Leader Panel. It is not a ranking of the number of copies sold, nor a complete census of all game purchases: GamesBeat notes that digital data was missing for specified titles and platforms.

As a result, the ranking is useful for comparing reported U.S. dollar sales within its stated coverage, but it should not be read as a comprehensive unit-sales tally. The article describes coverage across Nintendo eShop, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC; it does not describe hardware-packaged bundle software as part of the chart.
How did August sales compare with a year earlier?
Circana figures cited by GamesBeat show total U.S. video-game spending of $4.120 billion in August 2024, down 7% from August 2023. Content spending was $3.739 billion, down 5%; hardware spending was $208 million, down 36%; and accessories spending was $173 million, down 3%.

The steepest decline among these categories was hardware. GamesBeat quoted Circana executive producer Mat Piscatella saying that all current-generation console hardware platforms fell at least 34% year over year, with Nintendo Switch down 41%, the sharpest decline. Piscatella also said growth in remote-play devices, including PlayStation Portal, was offset by a 10% year-over-year drop in gamepad spending. These are August 2024 comparisons, not current market figures.

The “two months in a row” description refers to EA football games taking the monthly top spot across those two consecutive months, not College Football 25 winning both. The monthly result also differs from the year-to-date chart in the same GamesBeat report: College Football 25 ranked first year to date, while Madden NFL 25 ranked twelfth.
