Apple removed the 512GB unified-memory option from its M3 Ultra Mac Studio in early March 2026. The upgrade had cost $4,000 in the U.S. before it disappeared. Apple later reportedly removed the 256GB option as well, leaving only a 96GB M3 Ultra configuration in its online store at that point.
The timing coincides with rising memory costs, strong AI-server demand and longer Mac delivery estimates. However, Apple has not confirmed that a DRAM shortage caused the change.

What happened to the Mac Studio’s 512GB option?
The missing configuration was 512GB of unified memory, not a 512GB SSD. It was available only on the high-end M3 Ultra Mac Studio, which launched in 2025 with 96GB as its base memory and support for up to 512GB.

In May, MacRumors reported that Apple had also removed the M3 Ultra’s 256GB configuration from its online store. The store reportedly offered the M3 Ultra only with 96GB at that time.
These are historical availability snapshots. Apple’s technical specifications page still lists the M3 Ultra as supporting up to 256GB, creating a discrepancy between Apple’s documentation and reported store availability. For a purchase decision, the live configuration and checkout page—not a potentially outdated specification page—is the practical authority.

Why 512GB unified memory matters
Apple silicon uses a shared memory pool. The CPU, GPU and Neural Engine can access the same unified memory, rather than relying on separate system RAM and dedicated graphics memory. Apple lists the M3 Ultra’s memory bandwidth at 819GB/s and says the chip can support workloads involving very large language models.
A 512GB configuration is relevant to a relatively small but important group of buyers:
- Developers running very large language models locally.
- Studios handling large video, 3D, scientific or engineering workloads.
- Businesses that need sensitive data to remain on-premises.
- Users who need low-latency or offline access to large datasets and models.
- Professionals whose GPU memory requirements exceed ordinary workstation limits.
Capacity does not guarantee speed. A model must fit within available memory, but real-world performance also depends on quantization, memory bandwidth, software support, model architecture, thermal behavior and how well the workload can be parallelized. Unified memory is also not identical to 512GB of dedicated GPU VRAM.

Apple’s claims about running models with hundreds of billions of parameters should be understood as Apple’s product-positioning claims, not independent benchmark results. Read Apple’s 2025 Mac Studio announcement for the company’s original specifications and use-case claims.
Does this prove a global DRAM shortage caused the removal?
No. The shortage explanation is plausible, but it is not confirmed by Apple.

The verified sequence is that Apple:
- Removed the 512GB configuration.
- Raised the reported U.S. price of the 256GB upgrade by $400.
- Displayed longer delivery estimates for high-memory systems.
- Later reportedly removed the 256GB M3 Ultra configuration too.
- Faced public discussion of higher memory costs and constrained Mac supply.
That pattern is consistent with a memory-supply squeeze. Tom’s Hardware linked broader scarcity to manufacturing capacity shifting toward high-bandwidth memory used in AI infrastructure. MacRumors also reported comments from Apple CEO Tim Cook about higher memory costs and the time needed to balance supply and demand for the Mac mini and Mac Studio.
Still, there is no public Apple statement saying, “DRAM shortages forced us to remove the option.” The most accurate conclusion is that the product changes appear consistent with broader memory pressure, while the specific procurement decision remains unconfirmed.
How AI demand fits into the story
AI-server construction requires substantial quantities of memory, particularly high-bandwidth memory paired with AI accelerators. Increased demand for that capacity can affect the broader memory market and put upward pressure on conventional DRAM costs.

That does not mean AI is the sole proven cause of every shortage or that Apple’s internal allocation decisions are known. The evidence supports three separate claims:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- AI infrastructure has increased demand for memory across the industry.
- Apple has acknowledged higher memory costs and Mac supply constraints, according to reporting.
- Apple reduced high-memory Mac configurations during the same period.
Connecting those facts into a single explanation is reasonable analysis, but remains an inference. See the Tom’s Hardware report and MacRumors’ May report for the reported market context.
What this means for buyers
Buy a currently available Mac Studio if 96GB or 128GB is enough
The M4 Max Mac Studio launched with 36GB and can be configured up to 128GB, while the M3 Ultra began at 96GB. For many development, video, audio, automation and local-AI workflows, those capacities may be sufficient.
Buying is financially sensible when the machine supports paid work, replacing it would be disruptive, and the workload fits comfortably within the available memory. Delaying a needed purchase can cost more in lost productivity than a possible future discount.
Wait if more than 256GB is essential
Waiting is reasonable for buyers whose business case specifically depends on very large local models or datasets and who can tolerate uncertain delivery dates and future pricing. Do not assume that a future M5 Ultra will restore 512GB; Apple had not confirmed a release date or memory ceiling in the cited reporting.

Consider legitimate used or refurbished inventory
A genuine 512GB M3 Ultra Mac Studio may be the only practical way to obtain that capacity after the configuration was removed. Before paying a premium, verify:
- The exact unified-memory capacity in About This Mac or the original Apple order record.
- That the machine uses an M3 Ultra rather than an M4 Max chip.
- SSD capacity and condition.
- Activation Lock status.
- AppleCare eligibility, warranty coverage and return rights.
Do not confuse a “512GB Mac” listing with 512GB of memory. Sellers may be referring to a 512GB SSD. Unified memory is integrated into the Apple silicon package and cannot be upgraded later.
Use cloud compute for occasional large workloads
Cloud GPU and high-memory services can be more economical than purchasing an expensive workstation when large-model access is occasional or bursty. They also avoid the need to buy hardware whose capacity may sit unused.
The trade-offs include recurring charges, data-transfer fees, internet dependence, variable availability, privacy and compliance concerns, and administration overhead. Cloud services are a weaker fit for confidential data, offline operation, predictable low-latency use or workloads that run continuously.
Choose a Mac mini only when the workload fits
A Mac mini can be a good lower-cost option for development, automation, media serving and smaller local models. It is not an equivalent replacement for an M3 Ultra with hundreds of gigabytes of unified memory, and higher-memory Mac mini options were also reportedly reduced during the shortage period.

Choose a Mac Pro for expansion, not automatically for memory
A Mac Pro may make sense when PCIe expansion, specialist hardware, rack integration or enterprise deployment matters. It should not be treated as a drop-in replacement for a 512GB unified-memory Mac Studio without checking the exact configuration, application support and total cost.

The former $4,000 512GB upgrade illustrates how specialized this product was. It was never a mainstream configuration. The greater concern for ordinary buyers is the reported 25% increase in the 256GB upgrade price and the possibility that constrained supply will produce longer waits or higher prices for high-memory systems.
The cited $4,000 and $2,000 figures are U.S. pricing reported in March 2026, not guaranteed prices as of September 2026. Check Apple’s live U.S. store before budgeting, and account for taxes, accessories, AppleCare, financing costs and the opportunity cost of tying up money in a workstation.

Bottom line
Apple really did remove the M3 Ultra Mac Studio’s 512GB unified-memory option in March 2026, and the 256GB option was later reported missing from the store as well. The changes align with a wider memory-supply squeeze intensified by AI demand, but Apple has not publicly confirmed that shortage as the direct reason.
If 96GB or 128GB meets the workload, buy based on productivity and total cost rather than speculation. If more than 256GB is essential, verify used 512GB systems carefully, compare cloud costs, or wait for a future Apple configuration—but do not assume that capacity will return.
