Luxury Watches: Why Exclusivity Persists—and How to Start Collecting for Less

Luxury watches combine premium positioning, mechanical craft and concentrated brand power. Here is what the market data shows—and how to start collecting without buying new at the luxury end.

Luxury watches are exclusive because the modern Swiss industry built much of its identity around high-end positioning, costly mechanical craft, concentrated brand power and controlled production. That makes access uneven, but the available industry data does not prove that watchmaking causes social inequality or that brands deliberately withhold stock. Collecting does not have to begin at luxury prices: pre-owned watches and lower-priced mechanical models offer alternative entry points, each with different trade-offs in price, choice and verification.

Why are luxury watches so exclusive?

Exclusivity in watches is both economic and cultural. The price of a high-end watch reflects more than its function as a timekeeper: mechanical construction, finishing, brand heritage and the meaning buyers attach to ownership all contribute to its position as a luxury good. The Swiss industry’s history shows that this positioning was developed, not simply inherited.

The industry chose the high end

The quartz-era crisis severely disrupted Swiss watchmaking. Fondation Haute Horlogerie (FHH) reports that between 1970 and 1985, six in ten sector workers lost their jobs and the number of Swiss watch manufacturers fell from 1,618 to 634. The industry later recovered in part by repositioning production toward the high end and rebranding the mechanical watch as a luxury product, according to FHH’s overview of the Swiss watch industry.

Mechanical craft carries a disproportionate share of value

In 2021, mechanical watches accounted for 37% of Swiss watch export volume but more than 85% of export value, FHH reports. The gap illustrates how strongly value is concentrated in mechanical watches; it is not a measure of all worldwide watch sales, nor does it say what consumers paid at retail.

Value is concentrated among a small group

FHH estimates that a small number of Swiss brands captured around two-thirds of the market. Its account of industry vertical integration links the pursuit of exclusivity as well as supply security to firms bringing more production under their control. Concentration and integration can help explain why access is not the same across brands and models. They do not, by themselves, establish that any particular company manipulates inventory or deliberately keeps a specific watch out of reach.

What the export numbers say—and what they do not

Export statistics help describe the industry’s structure, but they are not household affordability statistics, retail price lists or direct evidence of consumer purchases. Switzerland’s government overview says watches priced above USD 3,000 make up the largest share of Swiss exports by value. That describes export composition, not the share of consumers who can afford a watch or the price paid in a shop; see Presence Switzerland’s watchmaking overview.

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) reported that in the first half of 2026, Swiss watch exports were worth CHF 12.8 billion, down 0.7% year over year, while shipped units exceeded seven million, up 2.3%. FH said mechanical watches priced below CHF 500 mainly drove the unit increase, while the CHF 500–3,000 segment declined 5.7% in value. These are export-price bands, not retail-price bands. The figures are from FH’s July 21, 2026 release.

FH’s watch industry statistics are derived from customs data and can be revised. The consolidated figures describe exports, so they cannot establish end-consumer sales or how any single brand performed. The statistics page showed August 2026 as its latest monthly result when accessed; the next scheduled release was October 20, 2026, which had not yet occurred at that point.

FHH’s summary of Deloitte and Morgan Stanley-LuxeConsult reports describes a polarized market: high-end segments were more resilient while more affordable products faced weaker performance and smartwatch competition. As summarized by FHH, FH data showed that 2024 Swiss exports fell 2.8% in value to CHF 26 billion and 9.4% in volume to 15.3 million units. For the first ten months of 2025, exports fell 1.6% in value to CHF 21.2 billion and 5.5% in volume to 11.9 million units. Those periods and units matter; they are not full-year 2025 results. The account appears in FHH’s summary of the 2025 industry reports.

Can you start collecting without luxury prices?

Yes. A collection can begin with a lower-priced mechanical watch or a pre-owned piece rather than a new luxury model. The right route depends on whether you care most about a low initial outlay, access to discontinued designs, convenience or the reassurance of buying new. A lower price does not eliminate the need to check condition, service history and seller credibility.

Route Price and model access What to check Price context
New luxury watch Generally the high-end route; the sources do not establish a representative retail price. New models do not provide access to discontinued references. Confirm the seller, warranty terms and service arrangements for the specific model. Retail purchase; export statistics are not a substitute for retail prices.
Pre-owned luxury watch May cost less than a comparable new watch and can provide access to discontinued references, though popular pieces can remain expensive. Give extra attention to authenticity, provenance, condition and available warranty or service support; no cited source establishes any platform’s authentication performance. Retail resale transaction; actual prices vary by watch and condition.
Lower-priced mechanical watch Offers a way to own a mechanical watch without beginning at the luxury end. FH’s sub-CHF 500 export band is not a promise of a retail price below CHF 500. Compare the specific watch’s specifications, condition if applicable, seller support and service options. FH export-price categories cannot be read as consumer prices.

Pre-owned interest is growing among at least some younger prospective buyers. FHH’s account of Deloitte’s 2025 study says 40% of Gen Z respondents said they were likely to buy a pre-owned watch in the next twelve months. This is stated purchase intention among survey respondents, not a count of completed purchases. In a separate context, FHH’s summary of Deloitte’s 2023 study says second-hand interest had shifted toward higher price ranges. The two findings come from different study years and should not be treated as a single trend measurement.

In the 2025 study as reported by FHH, 60% of respondents said they were more likely to buy from a physical store, citing the chance to feel and try on a watch, build relationships and receive advice. That is a survey response, not observed buying behavior. For an individual buyer, trying a watch in person may help assess fit and condition, while any purchase still calls for clear terms and documentation.

How to make a careful first purchase

  1. Set a total budget. Include not only the purchase price but any service, repair or authentication costs you may incur. Do not use export-price bands as a proxy for what a retailer will charge.
  2. Choose the route before the model. Decide whether you want a new watch, a pre-owned luxury reference or a lower-priced mechanical watch. If a particular discontinued design is the goal, new stock may not be an option.
  3. Check the individual watch and seller. For a pre-owned purchase, ask for condition details, provenance and any available service records, and understand what recourse the seller offers. The cited market reports do not certify any particular seller or authentication process.
  4. Make service part of the decision. Establish what warranty or service support applies to that specific watch and seller before paying. Availability and terms are not uniform across all pre-owned watches.
  5. Buy for use and appreciation, not a promised return. The sources establish market structure and consumer interest, not future prices for particular models. They do not support treating any watch as a reliable investment.

Exclusivity is a market feature, not proof of a social effect

Calling luxury watches “antidemocratizing” is most defensible as a description of unequal market access: concentrated brands, high-end positioning and the cultural premium on mechanical craft can place many models beyond some buyers’ budgets. The industry evidence cited here documents those structures and consumer preferences; it does not measure the effect on social inequality or demonstrate that scarcity is always artificial.

The sector also faces recurring disruption. Cyrille Vigneron, Cartier Culture and Philanthropy chairman and Cartier CEO from 2016 to 2024, told FHH: “The watch industry has been going through numerous cycles of disruption. Now these are more frequent with shorter horizons, requiring enhanced agility.” The observation offers context for a changing industry, not a forecast of which brands or models will succeed.
