A second job adds its wages to the income considered on your federal tax return, but it does not automatically make all your income subject to a higher tax rate. The main paycheck risk is that two employers may each withhold tax without adequately accounting for the other job. Review your withholding when you start the second job, then adjust a Form W-4 or make estimated payments if needed.
What changes when you take a second job?
Your annual federal income tax is based on your overall tax picture, including income from both jobs, filing status, deductions, and credits. A second job can increase your taxable income and may put some income in a higher marginal tax bracket. It does not mean that all your income is taxed at that higher rate. Your exact tax cannot be determined from the number of jobs alone.
Withholding is different from the final tax calculated on your return. Each employer generally calculates withholding from the information on the W-4 you give that employer. If the forms do not reflect your combined income, the total withheld during the year may fall short of what you owe. The IRS describes federal income tax as a pay-as-you-go tax, so the goal is to pay enough during the year through withholding, estimated payments, or both. See the IRS guidance on tax withholding.
How should you update your W-4 for two employee jobs?
Use the 2026 Form W-4 to account for both jobs rather than treating each paycheck in isolation. Step 2 covers multiple jobs. The form offers a checkbox for certain two-job situations, as well as a worksheet for a more specific adjustment.

Choose the Step 2 method that fits
| Method | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Step 2(c) checkbox | A qualifying household with two jobs | Simpler, but less tailored than the worksheet or estimator. |
| Multiple-jobs worksheet | When you want to calculate a specific adjustment using the form | Requires more information. Complete the worksheet on only one W-4; the IRS form says results are generally most accurate when its adjustment is placed on the W-4 for the highest-paying job. |
| IRS Tax Withholding Estimator | When wages vary or you have other income, credits, deductions, or more complex circumstances | Requires household and income details, but can provide a more tailored withholding estimate. |
Follow the current form’s directions for the checkbox and worksheet. For more than three jobs or the higher-wage circumstances specified on the form, consult IRS Publication 505 or use the estimator instead of guessing at an adjustment.
Update the form with the result
- Gather recent pay information for both jobs, along with your filing status and relevant details about other income, deductions, and credits.
- Use the Step 2 method that fits, or enter your circumstances in the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
- Submit an updated W-4 to the employer or employers indicated by the form or estimator. Use Step 4(c) to request additional withholding if the calculation calls for it.
- Check the result again when your pay or household circumstances change, such as a change in hours, a new job, or a change in other income.
How can you tell whether withholding is enough?
The IRS estimator can help assess whether your expected withholding covers your anticipated federal tax and whether to submit a new W-4. It is more useful than choosing an arbitrary extra amount: the right adjustment depends on your pay, pay frequency, filing status, credits, deductions, and other income. The IRS recommends reviewing withholding when circumstances change; its Form W-4 guidance also explains the employee withholding certificate.

Does a second job change Social Security and Medicare taxes?
Federal income-tax withholding and Social Security and Medicare taxes are separate. A W-4 adjustment addresses federal income-tax withholding; it does not automatically settle every payroll-tax question. The IRS explains the distinct employment-tax rules in Understanding employment taxes.
