That means staff can choose to work on weekends; it does not mean they must work all seven days, or that employees collectively prefer doing so.
What changed at Lumen SEO?
Founder and CEO Aled Nelmes told El Confidencial in June 2025 that Lumen had first adopted a four-day week roughly two years earlier. Employees worked about 32 hours from Monday to Thursday, without a pay cut from their previous five-day schedule.
Nelmes later introduced a three-month trial of a more flexible arrangement: employees would still work 32 hours a week, but could choose when and where to work. In his public announcement, he described the plan as a trial in which team members could work “at any time and from anywhere.”
Nelmes explained the shift to El Confidencial in Spanish: “La idea de la semana de 32 horas es ir más allá en la flexibilidad que nos ofrecía la de cuatro días.” In English: “The idea of the 32-hour week is to go further in the flexibility the four-day week offered us.”

Do Lumen employees have to work every day?
No. Lumen’s about page says employees may work at any time and from anywhere from Monday through Sunday, provided they meet their goals. The seven-day span describes the days available for scheduling, not a seven-day requirement. The policy is presented as an approach built on trust and autonomy.
How does the 32-hour schedule work?
Employees choose how to arrange their 32 hours around the team’s goals. Reporting on the model describes a shared commitment of three hours each week for meetings and training, with the rest of the time organized individually. Nelmes has emphasized that the arrangement depends on people being self-directed and able to manage their work. Did the four-day week improve productivity?
Nelmes said the earlier four-day-week experiment was associated with happier, healthier employees and higher productivity. He also attributed zero staff turnover and a rise in applicants per opening from 50 to 200 to that earlier experiment. These are claims from the company’s CEO, reported by El Confidencial—not independently audited results or findings from a controlled study.
The available reporting does not provide an independently measured productivity or wellbeing figure for Lumen, nor does it establish that the flexible 32-hour arrangement caused better outcomes. It also does not show that Lumen employees generally prefer working across all seven days. The reported hiring and retention outcomes relate to the earlier four-day-week experiment, not proof of the newer schedule’s effects.
