What Lufthansa has announced
At its Capital Markets Day in Munich on 29 September 2025, Lufthansa Group announced plans for around 4,000 gross full-time-equivalent (FTE) reductions, primarily in administrative roles, by 2030. The company says the positions are worldwide, with most reductions expected in Germany. Lufthansa’s 2025 Annual Report describes the planned cuts as around 4,000 jobs, mainly in Germany; its Capital Markets Day presentation specifies gross FTE reductions.
“Gross” matters: Lufthansa presented the reductions alongside plans to build up and bundle approximately 1,500 FTE at international locations. Those positions are part of the organizational shift, not an additional 1,500 cuts. The presentation and German public broadcaster Tagesschau describe positions moving from Frankfurt to other international group locations; Tagesschau reported that Frankfurt could face a disproportionate reduction. The sources do not establish how many individual jobs will be eliminated rather than relocated.
Which jobs are affected—and what is not yet known?
Lufthansa identifies administrative work as the focus, rather than operational roles such as the positions it says it has been recruiting to support operations. It has not supplied a complete department-by-department or site-by-site list, identified confirmed job titles, or published an annual sequence for implementing the plan. Individual employees therefore cannot infer from the 4,000 figure alone whether their post will be cut, relocated, reorganized or retained.

The plan also should not be read as a target to reduce Lufthansa Group’s total workforce by 4,000 on a net basis. The restructuring presentation pairs gross reductions with international hiring and bundling, and does not state a net group-wide headcount target.
Why is Lufthansa restructuring administrative work?
Lufthansa says it wants closer cooperation between Group Functions and its airlines, to remove duplicated work and consolidate processes. Its 2025 Annual Report says: “The goal is to achieve closer and more networked cooperation between Group Functions and airlines to leverage synergies and for greater efficiency.”
The company also points to digitalisation, greater use of artificial intelligence and automation as ways to achieve efficiency gains. These are management’s stated rationale for the plan, not independently measured explanations for each position reduction. The Annual Report says that “the far-reaching upheavals resulting from digitalisation and the increased use of artificial intelligence will deliver efficiency gains in many areas and processes.”

How the plan fits Lufthansa’s wider financial targets
The job plan is one element of Lufthansa’s broader transformation strategy. At its September 2025 Capital Markets Day, the group set the following targets for 2028–2030; these are targets, not reported results:

The savings and costs are figures Lufthansa associated with its workforce-rightsizing program in its Capital Markets Day presentation; the presentation does not make them evidence of savings already achieved. Lufthansa also expects more than 230 new aircraft by 2030, including 100 long-haul aircraft, as part of its broader strategy. The company’s materials do not say aircraft deliveries directly cause the administrative reductions.
Why the 2025 headcount figures do not contradict the plan
Lufthansa Group reported 103,255 employees worldwide at year-end 2025, up from 101,709 at year-end 2024—an increase of 1,546, or 2%. It attributed the increase mainly to recruitment in operational areas. The group reported 67,091 employees in Germany at year-end 2025, or 65% of its workforce.

These are reported workforce totals for those year-ends; the 4,000 figure is a planned reduction in primarily administrative roles by 2030. Different job categories and time periods explain why a growing reported workforce in 2025 does not mean the later administrative plan has already been carried out—or that the planned cuts have been cancelled.

Lufthansa’s presentation says implementation will involve timely dialogue with social partners. That describes the company’s stated approach; it does not establish that an agreement has been reached. Tagesschau reported that the union ver.di opposed the plan and warned against outsourcing domestic jobs. Its representative Marvin Reschinsky said: “Einen Kahlschlag am Lufthansa Boden zu Lasten der Beschäftigten nehmen wir nicht hin” (“We will not accept a sweeping cut at Lufthansa on the ground at employees’ expense”). The reported criticism is the union’s position, not a settled outcome of consultation.
What the announcement means for employees
The announcement establishes the broad scale, timing, geography and administrative focus of Lufthansa’s plan, but it is not enough to determine an individual employee’s outcome. The company’s published materials do not specify which posts will go, move abroad or change through consolidation, nor when particular teams will be affected. Employees seeking information about their own position will need details from Lufthansa and the relevant employee representatives as implementation discussions develop.
