Mercury Insurance’s 2025 list ranks 10 SUVs from its most affordable to insure through its tenth-place pick. The list includes 2025 and 2026 model-year vehicles, but Mercury does not publish premiums or a formula that would predict what an individual driver will pay. Use the ranking as a starting point—not a substitute for quotes on the exact vehicle you plan to buy.
Mercury’s 10 SUVs ranked by insurance affordability
Mercury Insurance published the ranking on August 12, 2025, based on research by its research and development team into vehicles available at dealerships. The release spells the first model “Sante Fe”; that spelling is retained here as it appears in the source.

Mercury’s announcement does not give an annual premium, dollar saving, or model-by-model price. The ranking is ordinal: it identifies Mercury’s order, not the size of any price difference between vehicles.
What Mercury says affects SUV insurance costs
Mercury names three factors that contribute to insurance costs: claims on similar vehicles, repair costs, and vehicle safety records. The release does not explain how these factors are weighted or provide the underlying data period, a driver profile, coverage limits, deductible, or state-specific rates. It therefore does not establish a reproducible calculation for the ranking.

Mercury Director of Product Management R&D Chong Gao said the list offers variety “from compact SUVs to larger midsize ones that can handle family duty.” That describes the range of vehicles in the company’s list; it is not a claim that every SUV suits every budget or household.
How to use the ranking when shopping
A lower position number in Mercury’s list indicates a higher placement in Mercury’s affordability ranking, but it does not guarantee a low quote from another insurer—or even from Mercury for a particular driver. Insurers price risk differently, and a driver’s location, record, selected coverage, and vehicle configuration can affect the result.

- Choose the exact vehicle. Compare the model year and trim you are considering. Mercury’s list spans 2025 and 2026 model years, and insurance quotes can differ by configuration.
- Request quotes using the same assumptions. Give each insurer the same drivers and address, and compare identical coverage limits and deductibles. Otherwise, the price differences may reflect different coverage rather than a cheaper vehicle.
- Compare your quotes, not just the ranks. Record each insurer’s premium and coverage details for each vehicle. Mercury’s list supplies no comparable premium amounts, so your own quotes are the relevant price evidence for your decision.
Insurance affordability is not the same as a safety award
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says its vehicle ratings assess crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation—technology that can prevent a crash or reduce its severity. Its awards are specific to model year and vehicle size category.
In the IIHS 2025 small-SUV award list, the Honda HR-V is included. The Kia Sportage result shown there applies to 2026 models built after May 2025. These safety distinctions do not establish which vehicle will have the lowest insurance premium. IIHS maintains separate insurance-loss information by make and model; that is a different measure from a safety award and from Mercury’s ranked list.
