Louis Vuitton’s 2025 data breach affected customers in multiple regions, but the only published count in the cited regulator account is a preliminary estimate of about 419,000 people in Hong Kong—not a worldwide total. Hong Kong’s privacy regulator said the company reported unauthorized access and listed personal information that may have been involved, including contact details, identity-document information, birth dates, shopping records, and product preferences.

What happened and when

Hong Kong’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said it received a breach notification from Louis Vuitton Hong Kong Limited on July 17, 2025. Based on information from the company, the French parent detected suspicious activity in its computer systems on June 13. Louis Vuitton identified an impact on Hong Kong customers on July 2, when its Hong Kong entity also became aware of the incident. The regulator’s preliminary estimate was about 419,000 affected Hong Kong customers. The regulator’s July 19, 2025 account does not identify that figure as a global total.

BleepingComputer reported that Louis Vuitton said notices issued in different regions related to the same incident. The outlet listed notifications in South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Sweden, and reported the company’s statement that unauthorized access resulted in the exfiltration of some client personal data. BleepingComputer’s report said the company stated that payment information was not compromised in the database accessed; this is the company’s reported statement, not an independently verified forensic finding.

What information may have been involved

For the Hong Kong incident notice, the privacy regulator listed names, passport numbers, dates of birth, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, shopping records, and product-preference data. The list describes categories of information potentially involved; it does not establish that every affected customer had every category exposed. The regulator’s account is the source for these Hong Kong details.

In the United States, a law-firm press release dated August 27, 2025 said Louis Vuitton North America had filed notices with the attorneys general of California, Texas, and Washington around August 22. Citing state breach directories, it reported 23,570 Texas residents and 17,615 Washington residents. The release described potentially involved information as names, contact details, addresses, birth dates, and passport or government ID numbers. These counts and categories are reported by Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP, which summarized state directory information; they should not be treated as definitive state-record figures without checking the underlying notices.

What customers should do

The Hong Kong regulator advised potentially affected people to watch for unusual logins to personal email and other accounts, check bank statements for unauthorized activity, and be alert to unexpected calls, texts, and emails. Its guidance does not establish that identity theft or financial fraud has occurred; it is a precaution against misuse of personal information. The regulator’s guidance also recommends avoiding suspicious links and attachments and not providing personal information in response to suspicious contact.

What is still unconfirmed

The cited sources do not establish a reconciled worldwide count or a complete official list of affected countries. The about-419,000 figure is the Hong Kong regulator’s preliminary estimate for Hong Kong. Reports of notices in other regions and US state filings show a broader footprint, but they do not amount to a definitive global total.

The attacker’s identity is also unconfirmed. BleepingComputer discussed a possible ShinyHunters connection based on sources, but reported that Louis Vuitton did not confirm the group was responsible. That report should not be read as attribution of the breach.

The Hong Kong regulator said it opened an investigation, including whether notification was delayed. The cited sources do not establish a final outcome. Louis Vuitton’s US privacy policy, last updated February 13, 2026, describes the company’s general use of reasonable technical, administrative, and physical controls while cautioning that internet transmission and information storage cannot be guaranteed completely secure. That policy language is general; it does not establish the cause of this incident or whether security controls were adequate in this case.
