Contact the company that handled the payment and ask whether it can stop, reverse, or refund the transaction. Then secure any exposed accounts or personal information and report the scam. These steps can improve your options, but no one can guarantee you’ll get the money back.
What to do first after losing money to a scam
Contact the payment company immediately
Call the bank, credit union, card issuer, payment app, wire-transfer service, gift-card issuer, or other company you used. Tell them plainly that you sent money because of a scam. Ask whether the payment can be stopped, reversed, or refunded, and follow the company’s instructions. Use a phone number or support channel from its official website or your account—not one supplied by the person who contacted you.
The right request depends on how you paid. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains what to ask for by payment method in its guide to what to do if you were scammed. Contacting the provider is worthwhile, but a reversal or refund is not assured; the outcome depends on the payment method, provider, timing, and circumstances.
Protect accounts and personal information
Money loss and information exposure are separate problems. If you shared a password, card number, bank details, Social Security number, or other identifying information, contact the affected institution and follow the FTC’s identity and account-protection steps. If identity theft is involved, consider whether a fraud alert or credit freeze is appropriate.

If the scammer accessed your computer or another device, treat that as a device-security issue too. Follow the FTC’s device guidance and, if you need help removing malware, contact the device manufacturer or a company you already trust. The CFTC also outlines steps to take after fraud.
Keep a record of what happened
Save transaction records, dates, messages, emails, account notices, and the names or case numbers you receive from companies or agencies. These details can help you explain the situation consistently when speaking with a payment provider or investigator. A report confirmation is a record of your report, not a promise of reimbursement.

Report the scam through official channels
- FTC: Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- FBI: If the crime involved the internet, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. The FBI also provides guidance on common frauds and scams.
- State and local authorities: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends contacting your state attorney general and local police or sheriff. Its list of contacts for scam or fraud help includes this guidance.
Find agency contact information on the agency’s official website. Do not rely on contact details in an unexpected call, text, email, or message from someone claiming to be an investigator or recovery specialist.
What to do based on what was exposed
Choose the steps that match both how you paid and what the scammer could access. A scam involving only a payment still calls for contacting the payment provider and reporting it; shared credentials, identity information, or device access call for additional security steps.

People who have already lost money may be targeted again by someone claiming they can retrieve it. Treat unsolicited recovery offers with suspicion, especially if the person promises a guaranteed result, demands an upfront fee, asks for sensitive bank or identity information to release a refund, or insists you pay by gift card, wire, cryptocurrency, cash, or payment app.

The FTC says government agencies and legitimate organizations do not charge victims to obtain a refund and do not guarantee recovery. If someone claims to represent an agency, verify the claim using its official website and contact details you found independently. Read the FTC’s guidance on refund and recovery scams and the CFPB’s warning about impersonation and scam contacts.

If you are helping someone who lost money
- Help them contact the payment provider using official contact information; do not take over their account or ask them to share passwords with you.
- Help preserve transaction details and communications so they can explain what happened accurately.
- Support them in reporting to the appropriate agencies and securing any exposed accounts or devices.
- Be alert for follow-up recovery pitches. Do not pay a fee or provide sensitive information to someone promising a guaranteed refund.
