The $150 million Australian Powerball draw Lotterywest discussed in January 2024 took place on Thursday, 25 January 2024; it is a historical draw, not a current jackpot. In a PerthNow interview published the day before, Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney described how the claim process works, recalled winners’ first reactions and discussed syndicates. A syndicate can pool money for more entries, but it does not make any individual entry more likely to win.
What happens after a major Lotterywest win?
PerthNow reported that registered ticket holders who win more than $500 in a single draw are often contacted by a Lotterywest representative and asked to check their numbers. The following steps describe the process Mooney outlined for a claimant visiting Lotterywest’s Subiaco office:
- Initial ticket scan: Staff scan the ticket for an initial validation.
- Private confirmation: If the ticket appears valid, the claimant is escorted to a private Winner’s Room for final checks.
- Ticket and identity checks: Mooney said staff check the ticket against Lotterywest’s systems and winning numbers and check for counterfeiting. Identity verification or arranging a bank-detail transfer takes about 10 to 15 minutes, according to the interview.
Mooney described the office as an ordinary office with a concierge. He said Lotterywest aims to make a winner’s visit positive and discreet, without requiring winners to face media or have their identity displayed publicly. He also said winners are given a low-key hamper with a memento and independently usable financial-planning information. These details are Mooney’s account as reported by PerthNow, not an independently audited description of every claim.
What winners said they wanted to do
Mooney’s examples in the PerthNow interview focus on how varied the first reactions can be. One man who had won about a million dollars wanted to buy his dog a special steak. Another winner used a caravan-shopping pretext to bring his wife to Lotterywest and reveal a near-million-dollar win.

Mooney said people commonly mention touring Australia in a caravan, paying off a mortgage or helping relatives. These are interview anecdotes, not findings from a representative survey of winners. He described Lotterywest’s intended approach as “really kind, positive, upbeat, but also discreet” because winners may not want a public spectacle.
Can joining a syndicate improve your chance of winning?
A syndicate pools participants’ money to buy entries, then shares any prize according to the group’s arrangement. More entries give the group more chances collectively, but each participant also shares the cost and any payout. Joining friends does not predict the winning numbers or make a particular entry more likely to win.

Lotterywest’s January 2024 announcement presented syndicates as a way to “Share in the cost of a ticket, and the joy of a win.” If you join a group, agree in advance on contributions, which entries are included and how prizes will be divided. The written agreement matters because it records each participant’s share; it does not alter the odds of the draw.
What are the Australian Powerball odds?
Lotterywest customer support lists the chance of winning Division One as 1 in 134,490,400 per single game, and the chance of winning any division as 1 in 66 per single game. These are per-game odds, not a prediction about whether a particular person or group will win.

What the $150 million announcement said at the time
Lotterywest’s release dated 25 January 2024 confirmed that the $150 million draw was scheduled for that night. It said the previous $150 million draw had been in September 2019 and noted a 2021 Western Australian $80 million win by a group of 55 women. The release also reported that 20 Australian Powerball Division One winning entries shared more than $552.15 million in 2023: eight entries were in New South Wales, seven in Victoria, two each in South Australia and Western Australia, and one in Queensland. Those figures describe 2023, not current performance.

Lotterywest’s responsible-play brochure describes lottery games as games of pure chance. It recommends setting a weekly budget and keeping records of winnings and losses, and says Lotterywest games are for people aged 16 or older. Buying more entries costs more; it should not be treated as a reliable way to make a jackpot more attainable.
