A loan against mutual funds can work for a temporary, planned cash need if you can repay it comfortably and accept that the lender may restrict or sell your pledged units. It lets you keep market exposure instead of redeeming immediately, but it is still debt secured by investments that can fall in value. It is usually a poor fit when repayment is uncertain or you want to borrow more to invest in the market.
How a loan against mutual funds works
You pledge eligible mutual-fund units to a lender, which marks a lien or otherwise records its security interest. You can then draw a loan or overdraft against the units rather than redeeming them. Your investment remains exposed to market movements, but you may not be able to freely sell or transfer the pledged units while they secure the debt.

The loan amount depends on the lender’s eligible schemes, valuation rules, and margin requirements. A fall in fund value can reduce the collateral available. If the loan then breaches the lender’s margin requirements, the lender may require you to repay part of the debt or provide more collateral; under its terms, it may also sell units. SBI, for example, says it may liquidate units to restore margin. SBI’s product terms describe that lender’s rights, not a universal rule for every facility.

It may be reasonable when the need is specific and short term, your holdings qualify, the amount is modest relative to the collateral, and you have a credible source of repayment. Keeping units invested avoids selling them immediately, but it does not make borrowing free or guarantee that the investments will earn more than the loan costs.
#1 Best Overall
- You know how and when you will repay the principal.
- Interest and all fees fit your budget, including if the rate changes.
- You can handle a decline in fund value without being forced to sell at an unwelcome time.
- You have checked the lender’s rules for margin calls, missed payments, and release of the pledge.
When is it a bad fit?
Be cautious if your income or cash flow is unstable, you cannot repay principal by the due date, or a market fall would leave you unable to meet a margin call. A secured loan should not be treated as a replacement for emergency savings or dependable income.
Borrowing to invest more
Using this loan to buy more shares or mutual funds adds leverage: investment losses can arrive while the debt and interest remain payable. It is not a sound default strategy for an investor who cannot afford both the debt payments and a fall in portfolio value. Compare the full cost and terms, not just the rate
Rates, fees, eligible holdings, limits, and repayment mechanics vary by lender and can change. The examples below are product-specific snapshots, not market averages or promises. Verify current offers and your own sanction terms before borrowing.
| Lender and detail | Stated terms | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| State Bank of India (SBI): interest | 11.50% p.a. | SBI stated this rate effective 1 April 2025; it is floating, resets annually, and is subject to change. SBI product page |
| SBI: processing fee | 0.50% of the loan amount; ₹1,000 minimum and ₹10,000 maximum, plus applicable taxes and levies | Product-page terms; confirm the current fee and tax treatment with SBI. SBI product page |
| SBI: borrowing limits | ₹25,000 minimum; maximum ₹20 lakh for equity, hybrid, and ETF mutual funds, and ₹5 crore for debt and FMP mutual funds | Product terms accessed 11 October 2026; limits are lender-specific. SBI product page |
| SBI: margin | 50% for equity, hybrid, and ETF funds; 25% for debt and FMP funds | SBI says this corresponds to borrowing up to 50% and 75% of NAV, respectively, subject to maintaining margin throughout the loan tenor. Terms accessed 11 October 2026. SBI product page |
| HDFC Bank: starting rate range | 10.75%–12.50% p.a.; ₹50,000 minimum | Digital Loan Against Mutual Funds page accessed 11 October 2026. HDFC says interest is charged only on the amount used; rates and terms can change. HDFC digital-loan page |
| HDFC Bank: fund limits and eligibility | Maximum ₹20 lakh for equity funds and ₹1 crore for debt funds | Eligibility page accessed 11 October 2026. Conditions include an HDFC savings account and NetBanking, singly held units, and holdings serviced by CAMS from supported AMCs. HDFC eligibility page |
| HDFC Bank: reported realized rates | Equity-backed: 7.75%–15.1%, average 10.28%; debt-backed: 6.75%–12.95%, average 8.29% | HDFC-reported rates for 1 April–30 June 2026, not a market-wide average or a current offer. HDFC digital-loan page |
When comparing offers, check how interest is calculated, what fees apply, and what happens if the collateral value falls. A lower headline rate may not be the cheaper option once fees and usage are considered.
Interest, rate changes, and fees
- Find out whether interest applies to the full sanctioned limit or only the amount you draw. HDFC says its cited digital facility charges interest only on the amount utilised; do not assume another lender does the same.
- Check whether the rate is fixed or floating, what it is linked to, and how often it can reset. SBI’s cited 11.50% rate is floating with a one-year reset.
- Ask about processing, annual maintenance, pledge creation and release, transaction, and excess-limit charges, plus applicable taxes. The examples above establish SBI’s stated processing fee; they do not establish every possible fee for either lender.
Collateral, margins, and eligible units
Confirm which schemes and AMCs qualify, whether your units’ ownership mode is accepted, and how the lender values them. Eligibility may vary between equity and debt funds and may be affected by lock-ins. Do not assume a different lender will match the SBI or HDFC limits above. A historical RBI circular describes valuation by NAV or repurchase value, or market value, whichever is lower; it is not a complete statement of current rules. RBI circular material
Repayment and enforcement
Understand the tenor, whether interest must be serviced monthly, when principal is due, and whether you can draw and repay flexibly. SBI says interest must be serviced monthly and principal repaid by the end of the loan. Also ask how the lender notifies you of a margin shortfall, how long you have to cure it, and when it can liquidate units. SBI product terms

Compare borrowing with redeeming or other options
There is no universal cost comparison: the result depends on your actual loan offer, the expense, your liquidity needs, and your tax position. Compare the total borrowing cost and collateral risk with redeeming units, using a personal loan, or delaying the expense. Before redeeming or pledging, check current tax rules and your transaction details with a qualified tax professional; the available information here does not establish the tax treatment of pledging versus redemption.

What to verify before signing
- Get the lender’s current rate, reset rules, all fees, tenor, and repayment schedule in writing.
- Confirm that your exact schemes, AMC, and unit ownership qualify, and ask how the lender values each holding.
- Calculate the amount you can borrow after the lender’s margin, not just the value of your portfolio.
- Ask what triggers a margin call, the cure period, acceptable ways to restore margin, and the lender’s liquidation rights.
- Identify a realistic repayment source and compare the loan’s total cost with redeeming or another way to meet the expense.
