Live sports betting—also called in-play or in-running betting—means placing a wager after a sporting event has started. Prices can change rapidly, bets and cash-out requests may be delayed or rejected, and a live broadcast may show events later than they happen. The rules also depend on where you are: UK and Australian regulators describe different restrictions, and neither example establishes the law elsewhere.

What live sports betting means

The UK Gambling Commission defines in-play betting as betting while an event is taking place, such as wagering on a horse race as it runs or a football match as it is played. It is mainly an online activity through a bookmaker’s website or app or a betting exchange, though it can also take place in betting shops or by telephone. UK Gambling Commission: In-play betting

Unlike a wager placed before an event, an in-play wager is made while the event is unfolding. Operators update prices as they receive information about the action and as their betting liabilities change. Markets may be suspended while an important event is assessed or prices are revised.

Why odds and bet acceptance can change so quickly

In-play prices are not fixed. A goal, penalty, injury, red card, or other development can change the likelihood of an outcome and prompt an operator to revise or suspend a market. Sports-data suppliers help operators update prices, suspend markets, and settle bets. The price displayed when you begin a bet may not be the price at which it is ultimately accepted.

Operators may put a delay between the moment a customer presses the in-play bet button and confirmation that the wager has been accepted. The length can vary by operator, event, and data latency. A market can move or close during that interval, so a bet may be accepted at different terms or not accepted at all. Cash-out requests can also be delayed; an offer’s value may rise, fall, or disappear as the event continues, particularly near its end. Operators offering cash out must provide clear, accessible terms explaining availability, acceptance, and settlement. UK Gambling Commission: In-play betting

Broadcast delay and information disadvantages

A television broadcast or online stream may lag behind the live event. Someone at the venue—or another market participant with faster information—may know what has happened before a viewer sees it. A stream therefore should not be treated as a real-time source of betting information or as a way to improve betting outcomes.

The UK Gambling Commission’s Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards (RTS 15) require information explaining that live broadcasts are delayed and that others may have more up-to-date information. The standard says this should appear on main in-play pages where practicable, with more detail in help or how-to pages. It was published on 2 February 2021 and last updated on 7 May 2024. Speed can matter beyond broadcast timing. The Commission notes that network connection, broadband or wireless speed, device processing, shared connections, and background software can affect how quickly someone places a wager. It also discusses bots and connectivity as potential advantages, particularly on betting exchanges. These factors do not make an outcome predictable; they can mean participants do not all act on the same information at the same time. UK Gambling Commission: In-play betting

Courtsiding: fast information from a venue

The UK Gambling Commission uses the term courtsiding for using or transmitting information from a live sporting event for gambling. For example, a spectator could communicate an event development to someone placing a wager before an operator or exchange user receives the information and updates the odds.

The Commission says it does not consider courtsiding an offence of cheating under section 42 of the UK Gambling Act 2005. However, courtsiding may breach an event or tournament’s entry terms. That is the Commission’s UK-specific position, not a universal legal rule. UK Gambling Commission: In-play betting

Live betting rules depend on where you are

Do not assume that a betting service or bet type is legal because it is accessible online, or because it is permitted in another country. The regulatory examples below concern the UK and Australia; they do not establish the law in other jurisdictions. Check the rules and licensing requirements that apply where you are physically located, as well as the operator’s current availability.

United Kingdom

The UK Gambling Commission’s guidance and RTS 15 requirements apply to operators licensed in the UK. Among other things, the Commission expects licensed operators to manage in-play risks, review their policies, identify possible signs of gambling harm, interact with customers they suspect may be at risk, and provide information about responsible gambling and help for problem gambling. Australia

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer certain online services to people in Australia, including online in-play sports betting, subject to limited exceptions. One exception it identifies is bets placed over the phone. A specific venue-based arrangement, such as the Tabcorp Tap arrangement described on the ACMA investigations page, is a particular statutory context—not a general route to legal online in-play betting. ACMA: Interactive gambling ACMA: Investigations

A 15 December 2023 ACMA report said operators of Ladbrokes, Neds, bet365, and Sportsbet had breached interactive gambling rules by using Fast/Quick Codes to facilitate in-play sports bets. The agency said a code generated after a user built a wager on a website or app meant the relevant betting information had not been communicated wholly by phone, as the phone-betting exception required. It reported that the operators changed the process so codes would be generated before events and be generic, and that ACMA decided not to take further enforcement action at that time. This is a dated enforcement example, not evidence of those operators’ current compliance. ACMA: Action against four gambling companies, 15 December 2023

The ACMA overview also reports that Australia’s Parliament passed the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Bill on 19 August 2026, including reforms that cover gambling advertising. The passage of a bill alone does not establish the commencement or current effect of every provision; check official Australian sources for the status of any specific reform. Risk, safeguards, and personal-finance considerations

Live betting combines rapidly changing prices with decisions made under time pressure. A delayed broadcast, a suspended market, or a cash-out offer that changes before acceptance can make it harder to understand what is happening and what a wager will cost. The ACMA recognizes that in-play betting can pose a high risk of harm to people prone to gambling harm. ACMA: Investigations

In the UK, licensed operators are expected to identify possible signs of gambling harm, interact with customers who may be at risk, and make responsible-gambling and problem-gambling help information available. Such safeguards do not remove the financial risk of betting or guarantee a particular outcome. UK Gambling Commission: In-play betting

  • Decide in advance what amount, if any, you can afford to lose, and do not treat a wager as income or a way to cover bills.
  • Do not rely on a live stream as proof that you have current information; it may be delayed.
  • Read the operator’s terms for bet acceptance, market suspension, and cash-out availability and settlement before relying on those features.
  • If betting is causing financial or personal harm, use the relevant local support services and operator tools, and consider stopping rather than chasing losses.

How to assess a live-betting service

Availability and safeguards vary by location and operator. Before using a service, check these practical points rather than assuming that a familiar brand or accessible app is permitted where you are.

  • Local legality and licensing: Confirm that the operator is authorized to offer the relevant service where you are physically located.
  • Broadcast-delay disclosure: Look for a clear explanation that broadcasts may be delayed and other participants may have newer information.
  • Bet handling: Check how the operator handles odds changes, acceptance delays, and market suspension.
  • Cash-out terms: Find out when cash out is available and how requests are accepted and settled.
  • Risk support: Locate responsible-gambling tools and information about help for gambling problems before you need them.
