For this guide, “GST Road” means Tamil Nadu’s Grand Southern Trunk Road corridor south from Chennai, through Tambaram and Chengalpattu toward Madurantakam and Tindivanam—not every road or attraction nearby. The official state road sequence supports that route, while the Chengalpattu district administration identifies several towns along NH 45 and connecting roads to nearby destinations. The best-supported lesser-known detours are Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Tirupporur Kandhaswamy Temple and Vedagiriswarar Temple at Thirukalukundram. None should be treated as a stop directly on the highway; check the detour and current access before setting out.

How to read this route

The practical direction is south from Chennai via Tambaram and Chengalpattu, continuing through the Madurantakam area toward Tindivanam. “GST Road” is an informal route label whose exact modern extent can vary, so this article uses it for that Chennai-to-Tindivanam stretch. The Chengalpattu District Administration lists NH 45 through towns including Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Karunguzhi, Madurantakam, Melmaruvathur, Acharapakkam and Thozhuppedu, and identifies connecting roads to places such as Vedanthangal and Thirukkazhukundram. These are nearby excursions, not necessarily roadside attractions. Chengalpattu district road network; Tamil Nadu highways department.

There is no consistent set of detour distances or travel times for all the places below, so compare them by what you want to do and verify the route in current mapping or navigation before leaving the highway.

Which stops are worth considering?

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary: a seasonal nature detour

Vedanthangal is the clearest choice for a nature-focused break. The Chengalpattu district page places the sanctuary 25 km from Chengalpattu and recommends November through March as the best visiting period. It describes birdwatching from the riverbank or an observation tower and gives an approach via NH 45 and Padalam junction. The season is visitor guidance, not a guarantee of sightings, and it does not confirm current opening or access. Check the district or sanctuary authority for current status and any advisories before making the detour. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary visitor information.

Binoculars are optional, practical equipment for observing birds at a distance; the district page does not require them. Plan this as a dedicated nature stop rather than a quick roadside pause.

Tirupporur Kandhaswamy Temple: a temple visit off the corridor

The district tourism page describes Kandhaswamy Temple at Tirupporur as a Murugan temple, notes its Pallava-period attribution and inscriptions, and provides a visitor-hours listing. Tirupporur is a detour rather than a stop on the main NH 45 corridor. Because temple schedules can change, confirm opening information with the temple or district authority before arranging your visit; do not rely on a published listing as a guarantee of access. Thirukalukundram: hilltop heritage and a town temple

At Thirukalukundram, the district tourism page describes Vedagiriswarar Temple on a hill and also mentions a temple in the town below. This makes the area a different kind of excursion from Vedanthangal: a religious and heritage visit rather than birdwatching. Check locally for access and opening arrangements. Stories about eagles appearing at the temple should not be treated as a present-day visitor guarantee. Chengalpattu district tourism places.

Tindivanam and Viluppuram: local leads to verify

Tindivanam Municipality names the local Thindrinishvarar temple among its points of interest, while the Viluppuram District tourism page offers a broader list of places to explore. These pages are useful starting points for finding local heritage, but they do not establish that any specific southern destination is especially little-known or give a complete, reliable detour plan. Choose a particular place, then confirm its location, access and opening arrangements before adding it to your itinerary. Tindivanam Municipality; Viluppuram District tourism.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary Seasonal birdwatching and a nature break District page gives 25 km from Chengalpattu, recommends November–March, and describes access via NH 45 and Padalam junction. Confirm current operation and access.
Tirupporur Kandhaswamy Temple Murugan temple, inscriptions and religious heritage Off the main NH 45 corridor; confirm current temple hours locally.
Vedagiriswarar Temple, Thirukalukundram Hilltop temple and heritage visit, with another temple in town A detour from the corridor; verify access and arrangements locally.

What about Mamallapuram?

Mamallapuram is an important visitor destination in the Chengalpattu district listing, but it is not a little-known find. Treat it as a familiar alternative if its attractions suit your trip, rather than presenting it as a hidden stop. Chengalpattu district tourism places.

Before you leave the highway

  • Check current traffic and route conditions separately; the listed attractions do not come with verified live travel times.
  • Confirm sanctuary operation, access and seasonal advisories with the district or sanctuary authority before traveling.
  • Confirm temple opening information directly or through the relevant district authority; published schedules may change.
  • Allow for the actual detour and the time needed at the destination rather than assuming it is a quick stop beside NH 45.
