How to Choose a Crypto Exchange for Buying and Holding Crypto

A practical checklist for choosing a crypto exchange: verify the legal entity, compare the full cost, confirm withdrawal routes, and understand custody risks.

Choose a crypto exchange by checking whether the right legal entity serves your country, supports the coin and withdrawal network you need, and makes the full cost and custody terms clear. Then decide whether you are comfortable leaving assets with a third party or would rather control the keys in your own wallet. There is no universal best exchange: the right choice depends on your location, intended transactions, and tolerance for custody risk.

How do I choose a crypto exchange?

Compare providers against the same practical criteria, rather than choosing by brand recognition or a headline trading fee. Verify details for the country and account type you will actually use; permissions, assets, fees, and withdrawal terms can differ by legal entity and change over time.

What to compare What to verify Why it matters
Jurisdiction and legal entity Your country, the exact company contracting with you, and its relevant regulator registration or permissions. A platform’s brand or availability does not establish that every service has the same legal treatment or protections.
Assets and transfer routes The exact coin and ticker, supported blockchain or network, deposit routes, external withdrawals, and limits. A listing alone does not mean you can transfer the asset through the network you intend to use.
Total cost Deposit and conversion charges, quoted execution price, trading fee, and fiat, crypto, or network withdrawal charges. The advertised trading fee is only one part of the cost of buying, holding, and eventually moving or selling coins.
Custody and failure terms Who controls keys; storage and segregation policies; asset lending or reuse; subcontractors; insolvency treatment; return procedures; and fees. Third-party custody creates provider risk, while self-custody makes you responsible for key security and recovery.
Account safeguards Multifactor authentication, recovery and support procedures, and protections against phishing or unauthorized access. Account compromise can interfere with access to assets.
Transparency For proof-of-reserves, its scope, date, frequency, assurance level, and whether liabilities are included; check whether audited financial statements are available. A reserve snapshot alone cannot establish every liability, later activity, or your rights in insolvency.

Before opening an account, check the provider’s current terms and regulator information directly. In the United States, the SEC cautions that crypto-asset accounts do not necessarily have protections comparable to bank deposits or registered securities. Do not assume crypto held on an exchange is covered by deposit insurance or securities protections. These are U.S.-specific cautions, not a summary of protections in every country. What should I look for in a crypto exchange’s fees?

Map the entire money path, from funding an account to moving out or selling. HMRC’s cryptoassets manual identifies deposit fees, possible fiat-conversion fees, trading fees, and fiat or crypto withdrawal fees as categories to consider. It is a checklist, not a current price list for individual exchanges. HMRC cryptoassets manual: transaction fees

For crypto-asset service providers within its scope, MiCA Article 77 requires publication of a firm price or pricing method and applicable limits for crypto-asset exchanges. It also requires execution at the displayed price when an order is final and publication of transaction information such as volumes and prices. Those obligations are specific to covered EU providers and services, not a global rule. ESMA MiCA Article 77

Can I withdraw my crypto to my own wallet?

Check the exact asset, network, withdrawal availability, and limits before buying. An exchange may list a coin without offering the particular external transfer route you want, and support can vary by account or change under the provider’s terms. For a provider within MiCA’s scope that offers custody and administration in the EU, Article 75 addresses custody-agreement disclosures, authentication and security systems, applicable fees and law, records and periodic statements, segregation, liability for provider-attributable losses, and return procedures. Article 75(6) says covered providers must have procedures to return client assets or the means of access as soon as possible. These provisions are not a substitute for checking your provider’s actual agreement and do not apply universally. ESMA MiCA Article 75

Is it safe to leave crypto on an exchange?

Leaving coins in an exchange account means relying on a third party to manage access to the private keys. A hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy can disrupt access. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin puts the risk plainly: “If the third-party custodian is hacked, shuts down, or goes bankrupt, you may lose access to your crypto assets.” That is a risk warning, not a prediction about any particular provider. Ask how the provider stores and controls keys, whether assets are segregated, whether they may be lent or reused, whether custody is subcontracted, and how customer assets are treated if the provider fails. Read the agreement for withdrawal and recovery procedures, fees, and any insurance terms rather than treating “custodied” or “insured” as self-explanatory.

What proof-of-reserves can and cannot show

Proof-of-reserves is a voluntary form of evidence about reserve assets at a point in time. Its scope, frequency, assurance level, provider, and public disclosures can vary. A snapshot may not disclose liabilities or activity between snapshots and is not equivalent to an audited financial statement; it also does not establish customer priority or guarantee that assets will be available when requested. The SEC advises: “In sum, investors should exercise extreme caution when relying on proof of reserves to conclude that a crypto asset entity has sufficient reserve assets to meet customer liabilities.” SEC investor alert on crypto-asset securities

Should I use an exchange account or my own wallet?

A wallet stores the private keys that control access to crypto-assets; the coins themselves are not simply stored inside a device. With an exchange account, the provider manages key access. With self-custody, you control the keys and must protect them and any recovery phrase. Losing that information can mean permanently losing access.

Approach Trade-off What you must manage
Exchange custody Convenient access through the provider, but access depends on the provider and its systems. Account security, provider terms, and the provider’s custody and failure procedures.
Self-custody hot wallet Key control with internet-connected access, which is convenient for transactions but more exposed to cyberthreats. Secure keys and recovery information, plus careful device and account security.
Self-custody cold wallet Typically a physical device not connected to the internet and generally less exposed to cyberthreats; it can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. Protect the device and recovery information, and maintain a reliable backup.

Strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication help protect exchange accounts. Never share private keys or seed phrases. For self-custody, make sure you understand how recovery works before transferring assets; a hardware device does not remove the responsibility to safeguard recovery information. Which rules apply in the UK, EU, and United States?

Regulatory status depends on where you live, the provider entity, and the service you use. The SEC alert discusses U.S. crypto-asset securities and related protections; it should not be read as a global statement about every crypto asset or account. In the EU, the MiCA requirements described above apply to providers and services within the regulation’s scope.

For a dated UK example, the Financial Conduct Authority’s page, first published 8 January 2026 and last updated 30 June 2026, says its final rules and guidance published on 30 June 2026 will apply to cryptoasset firms granted permission to operate under FSMA on or after 25 October 2027. This is a UK-specific implementation fact, not a current worldwide licensing rule. Check the FCA’s current page and the relevant register when assessing a UK provider. FCA: Cryptoassets—Our standards

A final check before you deposit

  • Confirm the country served and exact legal entity for your account.
  • Verify that the coin, ticker, network, and intended external withdrawal route are supported for your account.
  • Calculate funding, conversion, execution, and exit costs using current terms.
  • Read the custody agreement for key control, asset use, segregation, subcontracting, and what happens if service is interrupted or the provider fails.
  • Review account security and recovery options, and decide whether you can safely manage your own keys.
  • Read the date and scope of any proof-of-reserves disclosure; do not treat it as a guarantee.

If comparing providers, record the date you checked each fee, permission, supported network, and withdrawal rule. These details can change, so a comparison without a date can quickly become misleading.
