Lip-Bu Tan became Intel’s CEO on March 18, 2025, succeeding interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus. Intel announced the appointment on March 12. The handoff is a historical event; the cited announcement does not establish who leads Intel today.
When did Lip-Bu Tan take over as Intel CEO?
Intel announced on March 12, 2025, that its board had appointed Tan CEO effective March 18. Intel later said his first day at the company’s Santa Clara headquarters was March 18. In Intel’s account, Tan picked up his badge and met company leaders and customers that day. Intel’s appointment announcement and its account of his first day document the transition.

Who did Tan replace, and what changed in Intel’s leadership?
Tan succeeded interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus. Intel said Zinsner would continue as executive vice president and chief financial officer, while Holthaus would remain CEO of Intel Products. Frank D. Yeary, who had served as interim executive chair during the CEO search, was to return to the role of independent chair when Tan became CEO. Tan was also to rejoin Intel’s board after stepping down in August 2024. Intel’s announcement sets out these assignments; the effective date was also confirmed in the company’s SEC filings.

Why did Intel choose Lip-Bu Tan?
Intel’s board cited Tan’s semiconductor experience and relationships across the product and foundry ecosystems. Independent chair Frank D. Yeary called him “an exceptional leader” and pointed to his technology-industry expertise, relationships, and track record of creating shareholder value. That is the board’s stated rationale, not an independent assessment of how the appointment would perform.
The Associated Press reported that Tan had led Cadence Design Systems for more than a decade and joined Intel’s board in 2022. AP placed the appointment after Pat Gelsinger’s retirement, amid Intel’s downturn and layoffs, and described concerns about Intel’s position and Tan’s prior company experience. Those points provide context for the appointment, but do not by themselves establish what outcomes Tan would deliver. The Associated Press report describes that wider context.

What did Intel say about the CEO search?
In a message to employees, Yeary said the board’s search committee had worked over the preceding three months and described the process as “thorough and comprehensive.” That duration and characterization are Intel’s account of its process, rather than an independently audited measure. Yeary’s employee message records his description.

In Intel’s account of March 18, Tan said: “I’m excited to be at day one of the new Intel, and I’m looking forward to working with all the team members.” The statement reflects his message at the start of the transition; it is not evidence of subsequent results.
