LEGO plans to build a ground-mounted solar park with more than 30,700 panels at its factory site in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The company announced a 22-megawatt-peak (MWp) capacity and said construction was expected to start in summer 2026; that schedule is an announced expectation, not confirmation that construction has begun.
What LEGO has announced
The LEGO Group’s March 18, 2026 announcement describes a planned solar park on nearly 80 acres at LEGO Manufacturing Virginia in Chesterfield County. The ground-mounted array is planned to include more than 30,700 panels and have 22 MWp of capacity. MWp denotes the system’s peak rated power; it is not a promise of the electricity the array will produce over a year.
The park is one part of a broader on-site solar plan. It should not be confused with the separate rooftop installation planned for the factory buildings.
Ground-mounted park and rooftop solar are separate components
| Component | Panel count | Planned capacity | Location and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground-mounted solar park | More than 30,700 | 22 MWp | Nearly 80 acres at the Chesterfield site; LEGO’s March 2026 announcement. |
| Rooftop solar | 10,080 in the release’s detailed facts; 10,800 in its highlight bullet | 6.11 MWp | Factory rooftops; the panel-count discrepancy is within LEGO’s March 2026 announcement. |
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership gives a rounded estimate for the broader project: approximately 60,000 panels capable of 30–35 MW. That agency figure covers the full solar installation, not just the ground-mounted park, and is an estimate rather than a replacement for LEGO’s component-specific specifications. LEGO’s detailed ground and rooftop capacities add to 28.11 MWp, which is not directly equivalent to the agency’s broader 30–35 MW estimate.

When construction and factory operations are expected
LEGO said the solar park’s construction was expected to begin in summer 2026. The company’s announcement does not verify that work started or that the park is complete. In an October 1, 2025 factory update, LEGO said production at the overall factory remained on track to begin in 2027. These are separate milestones: the announced construction-start window for the park and the planned production opening for the factory.
The factory project, as described by LEGO in October 2025, includes a regional distribution center and more than 1.7 million square feet across 13 planned buildings. LEGO said the investment would exceed US$1.5 billion and create more than 1,700 positions over ten years. These are company-reported plans, not completed outcomes.

What the solar project is intended to achieve
LEGO says the solar initiative supports its ambition to source 100% renewable energy for the facility’s annual needs. That statement describes a goal; it does not establish that the site already meets its annual energy needs with renewable sources, runs on solar alone, or has achieved a particular emissions reduction. The sources do not state annual electricity output or independently reported emissions savings for the planned arrays.
Jesus Ibañez, General Manager of LEGO Manufacturing Virginia, said: “We’re proud of the progress we continue to make. These initiatives are key to increasing our use of renewable energy and support our ongoing commitment towards more sustainable operations.”
