The report said a cryptocurrency ransom had been demanded, but did not disclose an amount.
What happened to David Balland?
Balland was abducted in Vierzon on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and taken to another location, according to Gizmodo’s January 23 report. Authorities announced his release on Thursday morning, less than 48 hours after he was taken. The report said he was safe and receiving medical attention.
What is known about the ransom?
The kidnappers demanded a large cryptocurrency ransom, the report said. It did not identify the amount or say whether any ransom was paid, so neither figure can be established from this account.
Why did reports of the kidnapping emerge later?
Gizmodo reported that authorities asked the press to withhold news of the abduction while they attempted a rescue. That delay contributed to confusion, including a false rumor that another Ledger co-founder, Eric Larchevêque, had been kidnapped. Ledger denied that rumor, according to the report.

What was the investigation status?
At publication on January 23, Gizmodo said the investigation was ongoing. Its report does not establish whether charges followed, whether a case went to trial, or what the eventual legal outcome was.
Who is David Balland and what does Ledger do?
Balland is identified in the report as a co-founder of Ledger SAS, a crypto startup that makes physical wallets for managing and transferring cryptocurrency. Gizmodo describes the devices as running a custom operating system. That company background does not establish that a crypto wallet can prevent kidnapping or protect someone from physical coercion.
