LeBron James’s 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Patch Auto Parallel reportedly sold privately for $5.2 million in 2021, setting a basketball-card sales record at the time. It is not the record today: a Michael Jordan–Kobe Bryant card later sold for a reported $12.9 million in 2025.
Which LeBron James card sold for $5.2 million?
The card was James’s 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Patch Auto Parallel, a rookie card from his first NBA season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. BBC Sport reported that the parallel was numbered to 23 copies and that PWCC Marketplace brokered the $5.2 million private sale, announced in April 2021. The buyer was not publicly identified. BBC Sport’s 2021 report attributes the sale details to PWCC.
PWCC described the card’s scarcity this way: “At the heart of every collector in 2003 was the hope of pulling the ultra-rare LeBron James Rookie Patch Auto Parallel numbered to 23 copies.” BBC attributes the statement to PWCC, not to a named individual. Read the report.
Is it still the most expensive basketball card ever sold?
No. The LeBron sale was a record at the time, but NBC Sports reported that a 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Michael Jordan–Kobe Bryant Logoman card sold for $12.9 million at Heritage Auctions in 2025, surpassing it. NBC Sports reported the 2025 sale.

Why the sale does not value every LeBron card
The $5.2 million headline concerns one scarce, specifically identified rookie parallel, numbered to 23, sold in a private transaction. It is not a valuation rule for other LeBron cards. The comparison cards differ in design, scarcity, sale date, and channel, and the BBC report does not state a grade for the 2021 card. A past headline sale also does not establish what a similar card would bring in a future transaction.
For a meaningful comparison, identify the exact set and card type, serial numbering, grade and autograph grade if reported, date, and whether the sale was private or public. Treat each reported figure as tied to that particular transaction, rather than assuming it predicts a general market value.
