The $36 million figure in the American Airlines Cadet Academy lawsuit refers to the amount sought by 18 former cadets when they filed in December 2025. By April 2026, plaintiffs’ counsel said two more former trainees had joined and the 20 plaintiffs were seeking $40 million. Those figures are demands, not a settlement or court award. The latest located court ruling, dated September 2, 2026, addressed where the case would proceed—not whether the allegations are true.

What the former cadets say they were promised

In Anderson et al. v. American Airlines, Inc. et al., the former cadets allege that the Academy was promoted as a relatively quick route into commercial aviation. According to the complaint and plaintiffs’ counsel, they were told training could be completed in about 12 months for a specified all-inclusive cost covered by one loan. They also allege they were promised flying five days a week, mentorship from an American Airlines pilot, and an interview pathway to the airline’s regional carriers after completing the program.

The plaintiffs say the experience did not match those representations: training took longer and cost more than they expected, and they received less frequent training and mentorship than promised. These are allegations made by the plaintiffs, not findings by a court.

What the racial-discrimination allegations are

The plaintiffs allege that non-white cadets received fewer training opportunities and harsher evaluations, and were more likely to be placed in a remedial track or removed from the program. In an April 2026 statement, plaintiffs’ counsel said the amended complaint alleged non-white cadets were more than three times as likely as white cadets to be removed or forced to resign.

That comparative figure is the plaintiffs’ allegation; the sources available for this account do not establish it as an independently verified statistic or a judicial finding. The September venue order describes the 20 plaintiffs as non-white people with little or no prior aviation experience and summarizes their claims about borrowing, relocating, and not completing the program. The judge included that account as background to a procedural ruling, not as a decision on the merits.

How the lawsuit and amount sought changed

Stage Plaintiffs Amount sought What the figure means
December 2025 initial filing 18 former cadets $36 million Initial demand reported by plaintiffs’ counsel and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram; not an award.
April 2026 amended case 20 former trainees $40 million Updated demand described by plaintiffs’ counsel; not a settlement or award.

The case is Anderson et al. v. American Airlines, Inc. et al., No. 25-cv-03609-BAS-MSB, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. The December 2025 filing named American Airlines, American Airlines Group, Coast Flight Training and Management, and American Airlines Federal Credit Union. According to the court’s September order, plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed their claims against the credit union on April 7, 2026, and filed an amended complaint about two weeks later.

What American Airlines and the court have said

In a December 18, 2025 report by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, American Airlines said: “We take seriously the concerns raised by this group of former cadets, but we believe the allegations are without merit.” The report said Coast Flight Training did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On September 2, 2026, Chief District Judge Cynthia Bashant denied American Airlines and American Airlines Group’s motion to transfer the case to the Northern District of Texas. That decision concerns venue only. It does not determine whether the Academy’s alleged promises were misleading, whether discrimination occurred, or whether any defendant is liable or owes damages. The latest located order is not a final judgment or a merits ruling.
