Laurence Fishburne’s Career and Estimated Net Worth: How He Built a Long-Running Acting Career

A reported $30 million net-worth estimate is only a third-party figure. Fishburne’s long career across film, television, theater and production offers a fuller picture than any one reported paycheck.

Laurence Fishburne’s net worth is estimated at around $30 million, according to a figure Biography.com attributed to Celebrity Net Worth as of March 2025. That is a third-party estimate—not a disclosed or audited account of his assets and debts. His career, rather than any single role, provides the clearest context for how he earned money: decades of work in film, television, theater and production, including Morpheus in The Matrix.

How did Laurence Fishburne become famous?

Fishburne began performing as a child and was working on screen while still a teenager. The milestones are distinct: Biography.com places his stage debut at age 10, while Disney Entertainment Television’s press biography says his first television show was also at age 10 and that he appeared in Apocalypse Now at 15. Those early roles began a career that would move between film, television and theater.

His 1990s work brought major recognition across those fields. Disney’s biography records a Tony Award for August Wilson’s Two Trains Running in 1992 and an Academy Award nomination for his performance in What’s Love Got to Do with It in 1993. The Television Academy’s database lists three Emmy wins and 12 nominations for Fishburne.

His filmography also includes Boyz n the Hood, the Matrix trilogy and later appearances in the John Wick films. Morpheus is a defining role, but it sits within a much broader body of screen and stage work.

How did Laurence Fishburne make his money?

Acting across several formats gave Fishburne a range of professional work over time. His screen roles included films and recurring television work; his stage career included award-winning performance; and, from 2000, he also had a production company. Disney’s official biography says Fishburne and Helen Sugland founded Cinema Gypsy Productions that year and lists projects produced by the company.

  • Film: Roles in movies such as Apocalypse Now, Boyz n the Hood, What’s Love Got to Do with It and The Matrix added to a career spanning multiple decades.
  • Television: Fishburne worked in television as a child and later took prominent roles, including on CSI. A 2009 Guardian interview quoted him saying of the series, “I’m making great money and playing a wonderful character in the most popular show on the planet.” That comment speaks to how he viewed the job at the time; it does not establish a salary.
  • Theater: His stage performance in Two Trains Running earned a Tony Award, showing that his career extended beyond film and television.
  • Production: Cinema Gypsy Productions added producing to his work, though the available sources do not establish how much income it generated for him.

In a 2025 Los Angeles Times interview, Fishburne described himself as a “journeyman” and recalled needing work while supporting a growing family and carrying a mortgage. That is his account of career decisions at that point in his life, not evidence of his present finances.

How much did Laurence Fishburne make from The Matrix?

There is no contract or first-person financial disclosure in the available sources confirming Fishburne’s Matrix compensation. Published figures are reports, not verified payment records, and they differ in specificity:

Source Reported compensation What the figure establishes
Biography.com, 2025 Reportedly $15 million for the sequels, plus a small percentage of profits The site does not specify the percentage. It is a secondary report, not a disclosed contract.
Celebrity Net Worth, page accessed 2026 Approximately $40 million combined for the sequels, including a reported 3.75% backend This is the publisher’s more specific report, not a confirmed contract figure.

The figures should not be treated as interchangeable or added together. They appear to describe the same sequels but report compensation differently; neither source provides financial records that resolve the discrepancy. They also do not show that The Matrix alone accounts for Fishburne’s estimated net worth.

What does the $30 million net-worth estimate mean?

Biography.com reported in March 2025 that Celebrity Net Worth estimated Fishburne’s fortune at around $30 million. The figure is an estimate repeated by one publisher from another, not an audited balance sheet or a statement from Fishburne. It does not reveal how the estimate was calculated, what assets or liabilities it includes, or how much of his career earnings he retained.

Other reported compensation figures should be kept separate from that estimate. Biography.com also cited a 2009 New York Post report that Fishburne earned $350,000 per CSI episode. That is an old, attributed salary report—not evidence of current income or lifetime earnings. A reported paycheck, a backend estimate and net worth measure different things; none alone proves what someone owns today.

Why his career is a better guide than one headline figure

Fishburne’s career has continued across different kinds of work, from early screen appearances to acclaimed theater, a blockbuster franchise, television and producing. In the 2025 Los Angeles Times interview, he characterized himself as a working actor still pursuing interesting roles. That perspective helps explain a career built through successive jobs rather than a single payday, while leaving personal financial details private.
