The announcement was a historical restructuring, not a current layoff notice.
What Entegris announced in May 2001
EE Times reported that Entegris planned to complete the closures and job reductions by June 1, 2001. Its report identified the Colorado facility as Castle Rock; Entegris’s 2002 annual report later identified the two closed sites as Castle Rock, Colorado, and Munmak, Korea. EE Times, May 9, 2001; Entegris 2002 annual report.
- Sites: Castle Rock, Colorado, and Munmak, South Korea.
- Jobs: About 170 full-time positions.
- Workforce share: Approximately 9% of the company’s 1,800 full-time employees at the time.
- Expected timing: By June 1, 2001.
Why the company said it was closing the plants
Entegris described the move as a manufacturing realignment intended to improve efficiency and bring production closer to customers. The company said the microelectronics industry was contracting and that it would increase utilization at facilities in Malaysia, the United States, Japan, and Germany. These were Entegris’s stated reasons and plans, not independent findings about the results of the closures.
Then-president and CEO Jim Dauwalter said the contraction gave the company an opportunity to “realign our infrastructure around manufacturing centers of competency and optimize our capabilities worldwide.” He also said he expected greater use of its most efficient facilities to improve its ability to ramp up production during growth periods. What the closures cost, according to the company
Entegris told EE Times in 2001 that it expected pretax charges of up to $5 million for the closures and layoffs in the fiscal third quarter ending May 26, 2001. Its 2002 annual report later recorded a $4.9 million charge associated with the Castle Rock and Munmak closures. The first figure was the announced forecast; the second was the later reported accounting charge.
- $1.7 million: Termination costs associated with the 170 eliminated positions.
- $1.4 million: Estimated losses on asset disposals.
- $1.8 million: Future lease commitments for the Castle Rock facility.
The three components total the $4.9 million charge in the annual report. EE Times, May 9, 2001; Entegris 2002 annual report.

- 【Active Static Elimination for Thorough Dust Control】:Unlike standard air showers that rely on airflow alone, this anti-static nozzle actively neutralizes surface charges to prevent dust from being re-attracted after cleaning, delivering more thorough and lasting cleanliness
- 【Dual-Action Dust and Static Removal】:High-speed airflow removes surface debris while the nozzle eliminates static charges on materials and personnel, achieving dust removal and static neutralization simultaneously
- 【Cost-Effective Upgrade for Existing Air Showers】:Designed for direct replacement of standard air shower nozzles without major modifications, this upgrade transforms traditional dust-only systems into high-efficiency purification equipment at a fraction of replacement cost
- 【Robust Construction for Demanding Cleanroom Use】:Built with S304 stainless steel housing and tungsten electrode for lasting reliability. Compact size fits standard air shower plenums, compatible with both retrofit projects and new installations
- 【Broad Industry Application】:Suitable for cleanrooms in electronics, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, aerospace, and precision manufacturing sectors. Meets stringent cleanliness protocols by eliminating both visible dust and hidden static-related
How this fits Entegris’s later Colorado history
The 2001 Castle Rock closure did not mean Entegris permanently left Colorado. In 2022, the company announced plans for a manufacturing center in Colorado Springs; later award materials described production there of liquid filtration products and wafer carriers. Colorado Springs is a separate site and a later investment, not a reversal of the Castle Rock closure. Entegris Colorado Springs announcement and award materials.
Entegris had been formed in July 1999 through the merger of Fluoroware Inc. and Empak Inc. At the time of the 2001 announcement, its products included wafer transport pods and carriers, material containers, and tracking systems. EE Times, May 9, 2001.
