What was the TruCarbon program?
Truterra, a sustainability business and subsidiary of Land O’Lakes, introduced TruCarbon as a way for farmers to be paid for carbon sequestration associated with farm practices. The company said farmers could generate and sell credits to private-sector buyers; Microsoft was its first secured buyer. What results did Truterra report?
For its 2021 offering, Truterra reported more than $4 million in upfront cash payments for over 200,000 metric tons of sequestered carbon. It also reported an average payment of $20,000 per participating farmer, with some payments above $100,000. Land O’Lakes later reported that more than $4 million had been paid by year-end for over 200,000 metric tons. For its 2022 program, Truterra announced early results in 2023: more than $4.5 million was expected for nearly 237,000 tonnes, with an average of $24,842 per participating farmer among 220 farmers. How did Truterra describe measuring carbon in farm soil?
In a 2022 FAQ, Truterra said its process combined crop modeling and in-field sampling with historical soil-management data. It also said it covered sampling costs on fields it sought to enroll. How did the later program terms differ?
A 2025 technical sheet for a registered Truterra–Indigo project described a different payment structure from the 2021 launch offer. It stated total payment as 55% of the project-level average credit selling price. An estimated $20 per metric ton advance was described as possible and discretionary, not guaranteed. Contracted fields carried a commitment to maintain practices and report data for at least five years after the contracted year. The program descriptions represent different vintages and structures. The measurement details in the FAQ and the registry-credit description in the 2025 sheet are not interchangeable proof of independent validation.
