Reports put Lahore’s kite-and-string trade above Rs54 crore (PKR 540 million) during Basant, held February 6–8, 2026. The figure is a reported estimate, not an audited sales total: OLX Pakistan reported the amount without identifying its underlying source, while ThePrint attributed a figure of more than PKR 54 crore to the Lahore Kite Association. Neither account provides transaction records or a calculation method.
What the Rs54 crore figure means
The estimate concerns spending on kites and string in Lahore over the three-day Basant celebration. OLX Pakistan’s February 6, 2026 blog post described sales as exceeding Rs54 crore. ThePrint’s February 6 report said more than PKR 54 crore was spent and attributed that estimate to the Lahore Kite Association. The wording and attribution differ, so the accounts should not be treated as two independent confirmations of a measured total.
For personal-finance purposes, the number is best understood as a reported snapshot of a short-lived market surge—not a verified measure of household spending, seller profit, or the festival’s overall economic impact. The sources do not say how sales were counted, whether the estimate includes only completed transactions, or how costs and unsold inventory affect sellers’ earnings.
How many kites were reportedly sold?
The two reports also describe a high one-day sales count, not a daily total for all three days. OLX reported 500,000 kites sold in a day; ThePrint said more than 5 lakh (500,000) kites were sold in Lahore markets on Wednesday. Neither article supplies records behind the count.

ThePrint quoted Faisal Altaf, general secretary of the Lahore Kite Association, saying his shop ran out of kites and stock sold out within half an hour. That is one trader’s account of demand at his shop, not a measure of sales across Lahore.
What shaped the market during Basant?
Basant celebrations were scheduled in Lahore for February 6–8, 2026. ThePrint described the Walled City celebration as taking place under strict regulations. OLX reported a ban on metal and chemical-coated strings and mentioned free transportation. ThePrint reported that more than 7 lakh (700,000) motorcycles had protective rods, attributing that claim to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the sales estimate needs context
- It is an estimate: Neither OLX nor ThePrint publishes transaction-level evidence or explains how the Rs54 crore figure was calculated.
- The attribution differs: ThePrint names the Lahore Kite Association as the source of its spending estimate; OLX does not identify the source for its sales figure.
- Sales are not profits: The reporting does not provide sellers’ costs, margins, or net earnings.
- The unit count is a one-day figure: The reported 500,000-plus kites should not be read as the number sold each day or as a verified three-day total.
