Ladki Bahin Yojana: Has the Monthly Payout Increased to ₹2,100?

Maharashtra minister Sanjay Shirsat said in May 2025 the ₹1,500 Ladki Bahin payment could not then rise to ₹2,100, while stressing the scheme would continue. The latest located report said the hike remained unimplemented in March 2026; status after that is unverified.

No verified report in the available coverage confirms that Maharashtra increased the Ladki Bahin Yojana payment to ₹2,100. The latest located report, dated March 7, 2026, said the payment remained ₹1,500 per month and the promised increase had not been implemented. That is not confirmation of the scheme’s status after March 2026; as of October 8, 2026, a newer government order or report could not be verified.

What Sanjay Shirsat said about the proposed increase

On May 5, 2025, Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat said the state could not then raise the monthly payment from ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 because of the financial burden on the Finance Department. The proposed increase would add ₹600 a month. Shirsat also said the scheme would continue and the government would fulfil its commitment; his remarks were not an announcement that the promise or scheme had been cancelled. The Indian Express quoted him saying, “It is a fact that the payout under the Ladki Bahin scheme cannot be increased to Rs 2,100 due to the financial burden on the Finance Department. However, this does not mean that the scheme will be scrapped. It will continue, and the government will fulfil its promise,” and The Week carried a contemporaneous PTI report.

The same Indian Express report said approximately ₹400 crore had been reallocated from the Social Justice Department to fund the scheme. Shirsat disputed that diversion. That department-level dispute should not be read as a statewide fiscal assessment or confused with the later budget provisions.

What the later statements and budget reporting show

March 2025: no immediate increase announced

Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare said in the Maharashtra Legislative Council in March 2025 that the increase would not be immediate and had not been announced for the 2025–26 budget. She said the election manifesto covered a five-year term, and that a decision by the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers would come before a departmental proposal. Tatkare also noted that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had not specified that the new amount would begin with that budget. These were statements about the position and process at that time, not evidence of a later decision. The Indian Express reported her remarks on March 5, 2025.

Fadnavis was reported as saying an increase would depend on feasibility and fiscal discipline, and that the government would fulfil the promise if it determined the increase was feasible. His remarks, as relayed by The Indian Express, did not set an implementation date.

March 2026: lower provision and a smaller beneficiary target

A March 7, 2026 report by The Indian Express said the ₹2,100 increase had still not been implemented and the payout remained ₹1,500. It reported a ₹26,500 crore provision for the scheme in Maharashtra’s FY 2026–27 budget, down ₹9,500 crore, or 26%, from the ₹36,000 crore provision for FY 2025–26. The report put the FY 2026–27 beneficiary target at 1.53 crore after verification, compared with a previously reported peak of about 2.43 crore.

The same article estimated that paying 1.53 crore people ₹1,500 every month for a year would cost about ₹27,540 crore. That is the newspaper’s arithmetic estimate, not an official audited expenditure figure. A budget provision, beneficiary target and estimated annual payment cost are distinct figures; none by itself establishes whether a later payment-rate change was approved.

How to read the ₹1,500 and ₹2,100 figures

Figure What it represents
₹1,500 per month The payment amount described in the 2025 and 2026 Indian Express reports.
₹2,100 per month The Mahayuti election promise reported by The Indian Express in 2025; the available reports do not establish it as an implemented payment.
₹600 per month The difference between the reported existing rate and the promised rate, not a separately confirmed benefit.

The scheme was reported as launched in July 2024 for eligible women aged 21–65 from families with annual income below or not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh. These are summary descriptions, not a complete or current eligibility checklist; applicants should refer to the latest Maharashtra government resolution for binding rules.

Is the Ladki Bahin scheme being scrapped?

Shirsat explicitly said in May 2025 that the scheme would continue, even though the increase could not then be made. The March 2026 coverage describes a lower budget provision and a reduced target after verification, but does not report that the scheme was cancelled. Those facts do not establish what happened after that article. For a current payment-rate or eligibility decision, rely on a subsequent Maharashtra government order or an up-to-date official scheme notice rather than treating the May 2025 remark or March 2026 budget as a new October 2026 announcement.
