HP Hood announced a voluntary recall on September 19, 2024, for certain 96-ounce refrigerated Lactaid milk cartons that could contain undeclared trace amounts of almond. This is a historical, batch-specific recall—not a newly announced 2026 recall. If you have a carton, compare both its plant/code and best-by date with the company’s recall notice before deciding whether it is affected.

Why was Lactaid milk recalled?

HP Hood LLC said routine maintenance programs revealed the potential for trace amounts of almond in a limited number of cartons. The company’s September 19, 2024 notice said: “This issue was discovered as a result of routine maintenance programs which revealed the potential for trace amounts of almond.” Almond was not listed on the label, creating a risk for people with an almond allergy or severe sensitivity. HP Hood said no illnesses had been reported as of that notice; that is a statement from September 2024, not a current cumulative count.

Despite the wording sometimes used in casual discussion, the stated concern was possible almond in the milk—not a claim that the cartons were contaminated with almond milk.

How to tell whether a carton is included

The recall applies to a limited number of 96-ounce plastic cartons of refrigerated Lactaid milk. A carton is within the criteria only if its code is 51-4109 P2 and its best-by date is one of the dates in HP Hood’s full notice. The company says the code and date are near the center-top of the container. Check both; a matching variety or UPC alone is not enough.

Where the recalled cartons were distributed

HP Hood said affected cartons were shipped to retailers and wholesalers from September 5 through September 18, 2024, in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The Connecticut Department of Public Health also published a notice corroborating the recall’s scope.

What to do if your carton matches

  1. Do not consume it if you have an almond allergy or severe sensitivity. If you are unsure whether the carton matches, compare its code and best-by date with the HP Hood notice.
  2. Return the affected product to the retail location for a full refund or exchange, as HP Hood instructed.
  3. Contact HP Hood if needed: Hood Consumer Affairs at 800-242-2423, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
  4. If someone has an adverse reaction, Florida WIC advises calling a health care provider immediately.

For WIC-purchased cartons, Florida WIC described a store exchange for affected products; consult the local WIC office or retailer for applicable arrangements.

What the 2024 notices establish—and what they do not

The company notice and state notices establish that HP Hood announced a voluntary recall for specific cartons because of possible undeclared almond. They do not establish here whether the FDA’s administrative recall record is currently marked terminated. The FDA wording in the topic should therefore not be read as evidence of a new FDA announcement in 2026.
