Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What’s the Difference?

Lab-grown and natural diamonds differ in origin, not in the basic identity of the material. Learn why appearance and basic diamond testers cannot prove origin, and what paperwork to check.

The difference is how they form: natural diamonds develop through geological processes, while lab-grown diamonds are made using methods such as HPHT or CVD. Both are diamond material with essentially the same chemical and optical properties, so appearance alone cannot reliably reveal a stone’s origin. For a purchase, compare the stone’s documented quality and make sure its origin is stated in writing.

How are lab-grown and natural diamonds different?

Factor Natural diamond Lab-grown diamond
Origin Forms through geological processes. Manufactured in a laboratory, chiefly by HPHT or CVD growth.
Material Diamond, with the characteristic chemical composition and crystal structure. Diamond, with essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as natural diamond.
Appearance Cannot be reliably distinguished from a lab-grown diamond by appearance alone. Cannot be reliably distinguished from a natural diamond by appearance alone.
Quality documentation Compare the stone’s individual characteristics and the report or grading system used. Compare the characteristics and check which grading system and report format were used; GIA announced a descriptive quality system for lab-grown diamonds in 2025.

A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that may resemble diamond; a laboratory-grown diamond is diamond whose origin is manufacturing rather than geological formation. GIA explains the distinction in its guide to simulants, moissanite and lab-grown diamonds.

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

The two principal growth methods are high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). HPHT recreates some conditions associated with natural diamond formation. CVD deposits carbon-containing material onto diamond seeds. The differing growth processes create characteristics that specialists can examine.

Those characteristics matter for identification, not for making a quick visual judgment. GIA describes the methods and their role in identification in its natural and laboratory-grown diamond explainer.

Can you tell the difference by looking at a diamond?

Usually, no. Natural and lab-grown diamonds have essentially the same optical properties, and the differences in their growth are not a dependable naked-eye test. A loupe may help inspect a stone, but it does not establish origin. Nor does an ordinary diamond detector: traditional detectors are designed to distinguish diamond from some imitations, not reliably to distinguish natural from laboratory-grown diamond.

Reliable origin identification requires professional gem-laboratory analysis or sophisticated specialized equipment. If origin matters to your decision, ask the seller directly, get the answer in writing, and seek appropriate gemological verification rather than relying on appearance or a basic tester.

What should buyers compare before choosing?

Compare the individual stone’s quality

Where the report provides them, compare cut, color, clarity and carat weight—the four Cs used to describe diamond quality. A larger carat weight does not by itself mean a better-cut or more attractive stone. GIA’s 4Cs guide explains these characteristics.

Pay attention to the grading language and report date as well as the grades. On June 2, 2025, GIA announced that it would use “premium” and “standard” descriptive categories for laboratory-grown diamond quality, while continuing to accept lab-grown stones for evaluation and identification. GIA said existing reports remain valid. Its stated rationale included the claim that more than 95% of lab-grown diamonds entering the market fall within a very narrow range of color and clarity; that figure is GIA’s published rationale, not an independently verified market census. Check the issuing laboratory and date instead of assuming reports with different formats are interchangeable. See GIA’s 2025 announcement and its laboratory-grown diamond report information.

Check what the paperwork actually says

A grading or identification report can document a stone’s characteristics, but read it alongside the seller’s written description. The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to ask about gemstone origin and keep useful sales details in writing. For a diamond purchase, make sure the paperwork identifies the stated origin and the stone’s weight or size; include any relevant treatment disclosures and care requirements. The FTC’s buying guide covers these consumer questions.

  • Confirm whether the seller describes the stone as natural or laboratory-grown.
  • Match the stone to its report and check the report issuer and date.
  • Compare the report’s stated characteristics, grading terminology and any treatment disclosures with the sales paperwork.
  • Keep the written description, report and receipt together.

What about price, resale value and environmental impact?

Those questions need current, like-for-like evidence. Price depends on the particular stone and seller, and resale depends on the transaction and market; the available sources here do not establish a universal price gap or resale figure. Environmental comparisons also depend on which impacts and production conditions are measured, so the evidence cited here does not support a blanket claim that either origin is categorically better. Compare specific offers and clearly defined evidence rather than relying on a fixed percentage or broad promise.
