How Kylie Cosmetics grew from a lip kit into a beauty business
Kylie Cosmetics launched in November 2015, with the Kylie Lip Kit as its debut product, according to Coty’s announcement of its later investment. The brand expanded into eyeliners, eyeshadows, blushes, highlighters, concealers, brushes, and makeup bags. Jenner introduced Kylie Skin in May 2019, adding a skincare line shortly before the Coty deal. Coty’s November 2019 announcement described the business as selling through beauty retailers and its own digital channels; that was the company’s plan at the time, not confirmation of current retailer stock.
The brand’s official storefront, as viewed on October 8, 2026, displays makeup and fragrance categories, holiday gift sets, and featured items including the Supple Glaze Hydrating Primer, Coconut Water Lip Stain, and Mood Stones fragrance trio. Product selection changes, so those examples are a dated snapshot rather than a promise of continuing availability.

Dividing the $600 million price by the 51% stake implies a whole-business value of roughly $1.18 billion, commonly rounded to about $1.2 billion, at the deal price. This is an implied transaction valuation dated to the 2019–2020 deal—not a current valuation, a later audited valuation, or a measure of Jenner’s personal wealth. Coty bought a majority stake; the deal was not an announcement that Jenner personally received $1.2 billion.
What Coty said the business was earning
In its November 2019 announcement, Coty estimated Kylie Cosmetics’ trailing-twelve-month net revenues at $177 million. On the same day, Coty’s investor-call transcript also described approximately $177 million in revenue over the last 12 months and said the business had an EBITDA margin above 25%. Coty also said Kylie Skin had sold out in 10 hours and projected $25 million in calendar-year 2019 sales for the line. The sellout statement is Coty’s reported launch claim; the $25 million figure was a forecast, not a realized result established by these sources. Coty’s other expectations about growth, earnings, and returns on its investment likewise should not be read as achieved outcomes.
How did Kylie Jenner make her billion dollars?
The wording overstates what the deal establishes. Coty’s $600 million payment was for 51% of the beauty partnership, and the roughly $1.2 billion figure is the implied value of the entire business at the transaction price. Neither number, on its own, says how much cash Jenner personally received after taxes, other obligations, or any other financial arrangements; nor does it establish her total net worth.

That makes the historical ownership arrangement clear: Coty held the majority stake after the transaction, while the deal was framed as a partnership with Jenner and her team. The cited transaction records do not establish whether ownership changed after that closing, so they cannot confirm the current split.
