On September 4, 2024, Indian National Congress leader Jairam Ramesh warned that protests over a proposed Adani airport deal in Kenya could turn into anger against India and its government. That was a political forecast—not evidence that Kenyan public opinion had already shifted. The dispute concerned a proposed arrangement for Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), not a completed sale or takeover.
What was the proposed Adani airport deal?
Adani Airport Holdings proposed developing and operating JKIA, Kenya’s main international airport in Nairobi. The Kenya Human Rights Commission says Adani Enterprises submitted its proposal on March 1, 2024. The proposal included an additional runway and terminal, with a 30-year operating arrangement, according to the Associated Press’s November 21 report.
The Kenyan government said the airport was not being sold and that no decision had been made on the renovation proposal, Scroll reported on September 4. The proposal therefore should not be described as a completed transfer of ownership or control.
Why were Kenyan aviation workers protesting?
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union objected to the proposed arrangement over job security. It warned that the deal could lead to job losses and that employment might go to non-Kenyan workers. The union had threatened a strike, then postponed it while reviewing documents provided by the government, Scroll reported.

The dispute also drew legal challenges. The Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission went to court to block the proposal, according to the human rights commission.
What did Congress warn about India?
Ramesh, a Congress leader, argued that opposition to the airport proposal could spill over into views of India and its government. Scroll quoted him saying: “The protests can therefore easily convert into anger against India and the Indian government.”

His statement was a warning about a possible consequence, not a finding based on polling or other measurement of Kenyan attitudes. The sources cited here provide no direct polling or longitudinal evidence establishing that the protests caused lasting public anger toward India.
What happened to the airport proposal?
Kenya’s National Assembly record for November 13, 2024, says government engagement with Adani had been suspended under a September 9 court order. The order prohibited implementation of the privately initiated proposal while proceedings were pending.

On November 21, President William Ruto announced that Kenya was cancelling the proposed airport and energy deals with Adani, the Associated Press reported. The cancellation followed protests, legal challenges and other developments. It does not, by itself, show that Kenyan views of India changed.

The dispute brought together workers’ concerns about employment, the government’s stated position that JKIA was not being sold, and legal questions about the proposal and its accountability. The available accounts describe those competing positions; they do not definitively resolve every claim made in the dispute.

The confirmed outcome is that the proposed deals were cancelled in November 2024. Whether protests produced a measurable or lasting shift in Kenyan public sentiment toward India remains unresolved in the sources cited here.
