KPop Demon Hunters is a Sony Pictures Animation production made in partnership with Netflix, but the film’s production budget has not been officially confirmed as $100 million in the available sources. The first film debuted on Netflix in June 2025, then played a limited sing-along event; Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in September 2026 that the sequel would receive a “very broad theatrical release.” That points to a bigger cinema opportunity for the follow-up, not a guaranteed box-office result.
Is KPop Demon Hunters really a $100 million movie?
There is no verified, official source in the available material establishing the first film’s production budget as $100 million. Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix identify their roles in the film, but their public pages do not disclose its production budget or the financial terms of their agreement.
A Screen Daily search result reportedly described Netflix paying a little over $100 million toward production costs plus a premium. The full article was not available for verification, and a payment to a production partner is not automatically the same thing as a movie’s total production budget. Those figures should not be conflated.
For now, the defensible answer is that the $100 million budget claim is unconfirmed. It should not be reported as an official budget without a reliable source that clearly identifies what the figure measures.

How did the first film reach audiences?
KPop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony Pictures Animation in partnership with Netflix and debuted on Netflix on June 20, 2025. Its theatrical run came later as a short, limited sing-along event rather than a conventional wide release.
Netflix debut and streaming measures
In its 2026 one-year retrospective, Netflix reported more than 600 million views since the debut and 52 consecutive weeks in its Global Top 10. Netflix also cited Nielsen end-of-year data showing 20.5 billion U.S. viewing minutes in 2025. That last figure measures U.S. streaming time; it is not a ticket-sales figure or a theatrical-gross estimate. Netflix reported 15 billion soundtrack streams worldwide as well, a separate measure of the film’s music reach.

The limited sing-along event
Netflix said the August 2025 event sold out more than 1,300 screenings across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The Associated Press reported that the two-day event played in 1,750 theaters. AMC did not participate.
The event’s sellouts show concentrated demand for a special cinema experience, but its short duration and limited format make it different from a standard multiweek theatrical release. Its box-office chart placement cannot establish how much the film would have earned through a conventional release.

What the first film’s results do—and do not—show
| Evidence | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix reported more than 600 million views and 52 consecutive weeks in its Global Top 10 in its 2026 retrospective. | Strong reported reach and staying power on Netflix. | A theater audience total, ticket revenue, or hypothetical theatrical gross. |
| Netflix cited 20.5 billion U.S. viewing minutes in 2025, based on Nielsen end-of-year data. | Substantial U.S. streaming time during that year. | Global viewing minutes or cinema earnings. |
| Netflix reported more than 1,300 sold-out sing-along screenings in five countries; AP reported 1,750 participating theaters. | Demand for a brief, event-style theatrical presentation. | How a longer, standard release would have performed. |
These are different kinds of evidence: streaming measures reflect Netflix viewing, while the sing-along numbers describe a limited event. Neither provides a defensible estimate of what a full theatrical release would have grossed.

Netflix confirmed a sequel on March 12, 2026, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. On September 30, 2026, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said, “When the ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.”

That is a meaningful change in the stated plan: unlike the first film’s Netflix debut followed by a limited sing-along event, the sequel is expected to have a much broader cinema release. But “very broad” is not a detailed booking schedule. The cited statement does not provide a release date, a list of territories, or the length of the theatrical window, and it does not guarantee commercial success.
Sarandos described the strategic balance as serving moviegoers who want to see the film in a theater while avoiding harm to Netflix’s value. That frames the business question, but does not disclose specific distribution terms or financial projections.

How the release plans compare
| Release case | Known scope and timing | What the evidence measures | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|---|
| First film | Netflix debut on June 20, 2025, followed by a two-day sing-along event in August 2025. Netflix reported more than 1,300 sold-out screenings in five countries; AP reported 1,750 theaters. | Netflix streaming reach and demand for a limited event. | What a standard wide release would have earned at the box office. |
| Sequel | Netflix confirmed the sequel and returning directors in March 2026. Sarandos said in September 2026 it would receive a “very broad theatrical release.” | An announced theatrical intention. | Release date, territories, window length, booking details, and box-office outcome. |
What to watch for when evaluating the sequel
- A confirmed release schedule: “Very broad” signals intent, but a date and territory list will clarify the actual rollout.
- Theatrical window details: No window length is stated in Sarandos’s September 2026 remarks.
- Comparable financial figures: A production budget, Netflix payment, and any premium are distinct figures; one should not be substituted for another.
- Like-for-like performance measures: Streaming views, viewing minutes, event screenings, and conventional ticket sales answer different questions.
