The airline says it is preparing material for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to assess before its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) is finalised and issued. The sources available do not establish approved routes, fares or public ticket bookings.
When is Koala Airlines expected to start flying?
Koala Airlines’ official website says it plans to commence operations in late 2026. That is the company’s target, not confirmation that flights will begin then. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) also described the airline’s AOC as still in progress in its June 2026 competition report.
Until regulatory steps are complete and the company announces operational details, travellers should treat the date as provisional rather than plan around a bookable service. Koala Airlines’ website gives the company’s current stated target.
Has Koala Airlines received CASA approval?
The available information does not show that Koala has received a final AOC for its proposed Boeing 737-8 operations. Koala says its existing certificate cannot support those operations until the relevant criteria are met and approved by CASA. Its website states: “Management are currently working on the documentation required by CASA to undertake their formal assessment to ensure Koala Airlines meets all safety requirements before the certificate is finalised and issued.” This is Koala’s description of its status, not a statement from CASA.

The ACCC’s June 2026 report similarly says documentation was being worked through before the AOC could be finalised and issued. CASA explains the AOC framework and approval process in its guidance on Air Operator’s Certificates; that guidance does not confirm Koala’s application outcome.
What aircraft and fleet size has Koala announced?
The ACCC reports that Koala had reportedly secured leases for three Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, summarising reports from 2025. The report does not establish that the aircraft have been delivered or are ready to enter service. It also says founder Bill Astling described a “minimum optimum” fleet of 20 aircraft within the first few years. That figure is an ambition, not a confirmed order or operating fleet.

The ACCC’s account is in its June 2026 domestic airline competition report. The Boeing 737-8 and 737 MAX 8 names refer to the proposed aircraft type in the company and ACCC descriptions; neither label by itself demonstrates that Koala has begun passenger service.
Where does Koala plan to fly, and what will tickets cost?
The ACCC says Koala aims to bring overseas tourists to less-frequented parts of Australia. That indicates a visitor-focused proposition, but it is not a published route map or schedule. The sources reviewed do not establish confirmed destinations, service frequency, fares, booking arrangements or ticket availability.

Koala’s company history says it acquired Desert Air Safaris Pty Ltd in 2019. That company-reported background does not mean Koala has already begun scheduled passenger operations. Travellers should wait for specific route, timetable and fare announcements before comparing the airline with existing services.

Koala’s immediate stated milestone is completing the documentation needed for CASA’s formal assessment. More broadly, the ACCC describes airline entry and expansion as difficult. In its regional airfare submission, it discusses challenges faced by Bonza, including funding constraints, fleet expansion, aircraft suitability for thinner routes and the time required for regulatory approval. Those examples provide industry context; they do not predict whether Koala will succeed or meet its target.

What travellers should take from the announcement
- Late 2026 is Koala’s stated launch target, not a confirmed date.
- The company says its proposed 737-8 operations require further CASA assessment before the AOC is finalised and issued.
- The ACCC reports three aircraft leases and a 20-aircraft ambition, but does not establish delivered aircraft or a confirmed order of that size.
- The stated visitor-feeder idea has not yet been matched by confirmed routes, fares or public booking details in the sources reviewed.
