Kmart Australia launched its Baby Charlie doll with Down syndrome in late 2020, shortly before the International Day of People with Disability. Down Syndrome Australia was consulted during development, and Kmart said the dolls were intended to support inclusion and fundraising. The launch was widely welcomed as a step toward more representative toys, but available sources do not show that the doll’s effect on children’s attitudes was measured. Nor do they confirm current stock or price.
What was Baby Charlie?
Baby Charlie was a Kmart Australia doll representing a baby with Down syndrome. Launch coverage appeared on 2 December 2020, ahead of the International Day of People with Disability on 3 December. The launch report listed a price of $15 at that time; it is a historical figure, not a current price. KidsNews reported the launch and price.
Baby Charlie was part of a wider inclusive toy range. Kmart had also introduced dolls representing people who use a wheelchair, a white cane or crutches. In a 2022 report, Kmart’s head of diversity and inclusion, Marcelle Harrison, said, “We noticed a gap in the market when it came to diversity, so we decided to develop some dolls ourselves,” ABC News reported.
Why was the launch described as a win for inclusion?
Down Syndrome Australia said Kmart contacted it early in the development process. In the 2020 launch report, the organization said: “They reached out to DSA early in the process to consult with us about their ideas, and we’re happy to see dolls with Down syndrome in their new line of inclusive* toys.” Dr Ellen Skladzien, then the organization’s CEO, said the range highlighted “the importance of introducing diversity* and representation,” according to KidsNews. Later accounts described a deliberate effort to make the dolls more representative. Harrison said the company spent a year consulting designers, customers and advocacy groups during development, ABC News reported. Down Syndrome Australia’s 2022/23 annual report also records the partnership with Kmart and continued discussion of representation: Down Syndrome Australia’s annual report.
Kmart says its dolls with Down syndrome are intended to encourage inclusion and diversity and help raise funds for Down Syndrome Australia. These statements explain the organizations’ aims; the available sources do not establish a measured effect on children’s attitudes or outcomes.

Can you still buy the Baby Charlie doll?
Current availability and price are not verified by the sources available here. Kmart’s current inclusion information describes a broader doll range, while its doll and doll-accessory categories provide general browsing context; neither confirms that Baby Charlie is in stock. Check Kmart’s live listings or contact the retailer before making a trip or relying on a quoted price.
Kmart’s dolls and accessories category may help with browsing, but it is not confirmation of a Baby Charlie listing. The $15 figure reported in 2020 should not be treated as today’s price.

What the launch does—and does not—show
The launch is evidence of a named retailer developing a doll with Down syndrome after consulting Down Syndrome Australia, as well as part of a broader effort to represent disability in toys. It is reasonable to call that a meaningful step in representation. But a retailer’s stated intention, advocacy-group approval and a product launch are not the same as evidence that a toy changes children’s beliefs or behavior. No measured impact statistic or named study evaluating Baby Charlie was identified in the cited sources.
