Klarna’s US credit-card announcement dates to April 17, 2024, but it should not be confused with the different Klarna Card that launched in the United States on July 4, 2025. The later card is debit-first, with optional credit-based payment choices. The interest rate and fee details reported in 2024 describe that announcement—not verified terms for the current card.
What Klarna announced in April 2024
On April 17, 2024, TechCrunch reported that Klarna had announced a US credit card and opened a waitlist, with a rollout expected in the coming months. The report described a virtual Visa card compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Klarna chief product and design officer David Fock called it “one of our most asked for products” and said it would let people “pay in the Klarna way but with a card.” TechCrunch’s April 17, 2024 report was based on an exclusive interview with Klarna.
That report said the announced card would have no annual or foreign-transaction fees, offer cashback of up to 10% at selected merchants when used in the Klarna app, and let cardholders extend a due date or spread a larger purchase over three to six months. It reported an interest range of 14.99%–33.99% for those financing options. These are details reported for the 2024 announcement; they do not establish the current card’s fees, rewards, APR, or availability.
How the 2025 Klarna Card differs
Klarna later introduced a separate, debit-first card proposition. In June 2025, Klarna and Visa announced a US trial of Klarna Card, powered by Visa Flexible Credential and issued by WebBank. Klarna said it could be used online and in stores wherever Visa is accepted. The June 2025 announcement described debit use alongside access to flexible payment choices.

Klarna said the US launch took place on July 4, 2025. Its September announcement described debit as the default payment mode and listed Pay in 3, Pay Later, and longer-term financing for larger purchases, subject to approval. The company said a credit check is performed when a consumer applies to convert a purchase into credit; it also said debit functionality was available to Klarna customers. Klarna’s September 2025 launch announcement does not establish that every customer or purchase qualifies for every payment option.

Is the Klarna Card debit or credit?
The 2025 Klarna Card is presented as debit-first: debit is the default, while eligible customers may choose a flexible payment option for a purchase. A transaction paid from debit is not the same as one converted to credit. Klarna’s announcement says a credit check occurs when a customer applies to convert a purchase into credit; approval and applicable terms therefore matter.

This distinction also helps explain why the two launches should not be treated as one unchanged product. In the 2024 TechCrunch interview, Fock said Klarna wanted payment flexibility without a card “that builds revolving credit for consumers.” The 2025 launch announcement, in turn, describes debit as the default and optional credit-based payment modes. Neither statement, by itself, supplies a current cardholder agreement or fully establishes how every payment choice is structured.
What the launches say about Klarna’s US growth
Klarna reported more than one million US Klarna Card sign-ups in 11 weeks in September 2025, then reported four million US sign-ups in four months in November 2025. These are company-reported sign-ups, not independently verified counts of active cardholders. Klarna’s September announcement and its November announcement provide the figures and timeframes.

The growth claims sit alongside broader company-reported US business results. In its Q2 2026 earnings release, Klarna reported US gross merchandise volume (GMV) of $7.9 billion, up 27% year over year, and global revenue of $1.042 billion, also up 27% year over year. Klarna’s proposed US bank charter
On July 6, 2026, Klarna said it had applied to the Utah Department of Financial Institutions and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to establish Klarna Bank USA, a proposed Utah-chartered industrial bank. The announcement said Klarna served US customers through partner banks at that time. The application is a proposal; it does not mean the charter was approved or that Klarna had become a US bank.
