What can be documented is the career behind the speculation—songwriting, recorded music, touring, and merchandise—alongside publisher-reported figures for her global streams and album sales. Those measures show the scale of her career, not her personal fortune.
Is Lorde’s $18 million fortune verified?
No. The Economic Times search result repeats an $18 million estimate and broadly mentions music sales, streaming, partnerships, and merchandise, but the accessible material does not explain how the figure was calculated or identify who produced it. It is not a confirmed disclosure from Lorde or an audited net-worth figure. The Economic Times does not provide enough detail in the cited result to verify the estimate.
There is also no documented breakdown of Lorde’s royalty rates, advances, contract terms, ownership interests, expenses, taxes, or assets in the sources available here. That means it is not possible to determine her personal income or net worth from the career milestones and aggregate music figures discussed below.
What career activities could generate income?
The documented activities explain the possible routes by which a recording artist and songwriter may earn money. They do not establish how much Lorde earned from any one route.

Songwriting and publishing
Lorde is a songwriter as well as a performer. A 2014 Recording Academy profile says she co-wrote all ten tracks on Pure Heroine, including “Royals” and “Tennis Court.” The Recording Academy’s profile documents those credits, but does not disclose her publishing agreement, royalty splits, advances, or current ownership terms. Songwriting and publishing are therefore relevant potential income categories, not quantified earnings.
Recorded music and streaming
Universal Music Publishing Group reports that Lorde’s catalog has generated “over 18 billion global streams” and that she has sold 18 million albums worldwide. These are publisher-reported career-scale figures from its artist biography, accessed in 2026—not a statement of income or take-home pay. UMPG’s Lorde biography does not provide per-stream earnings, label or distribution terms, or her personal share of sales and streaming revenue.

Live performance
The Recording Academy’s December 3, 2014 profile notes that Lorde was then on an international tour. Touring is a documented part of her career, but the profile gives no tour gross, expenses, or amount paid to her. Gross ticket sales, if known, would not by themselves establish an artist’s profit or personal income.
Physical music and merchandise
Lorde’s official stores list physical albums and fan merchandise. The US store has listed vinyl editions including Pure Heroine, Melodrama, Solar Power, and Virgin, as well as CDs and other merchandise. The official US store establishes that such products are offered; it does not disclose sales volume, profit margins, or Lorde’s proceeds. The UK store has also listed Virgin LP and CD editions, but its inventory and prices can change. The official UK store is a source for those listings, not a record of earnings.

Brand partnerships
The Economic Times result mentions partnerships but does not name a deal or provide terms. No specific partnership or associated payment can be established from that source, so partnerships should not be treated as a verified part of a dollar-by-dollar account of her fortune.

The Recording Academy’s 2014 profile identifies Lorde as Ella Yelich-O’Connor. It says manager and Universal Music New Zealand A&R representative Scott Maclachlan discovered her at 12 and that she signed to the label at 13. Her five-track The Love Club EP came out in 2012 and reached No. 23 on the Billboard 200, according to the profile. “Royals” later peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as the Academy’s historical account notes. These milestones help explain the rise of her commercial career, but reveal neither contract terms nor net proceeds.

UMPG describes Pure Heroine, released in 2013, as Lorde’s breakthrough. Its biography also notes her return in April 2025 with “What Was That,” which it describes as her first original release in four years. The publisher’s reported stream and sales totals indicate the scale attributed to her catalog, but do not resolve what she personally earned.
In the 2014 Recording Academy profile, Lorde said, “I feel like there aren’t that many people my age with a realistic view of what’s it like to be my age.” The remark gives context to her experience of early fame; it is not evidence about her finances.

What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you
- They can show career scale: UMPG reports more than 18 billion global streams and 18 million album sales worldwide.
- They cannot establish personal income: the sources do not disclose the agreements, shares, expenses, or taxes needed to translate those totals into Lorde’s receipts.
- They do not verify the $18 million estimate: the accessible Economic Times result supplies no method or named estimator.
- They support documented career activities, not a wealth calculation: songwriting, releases, touring, and product listings are visible; the money attributable to each is not.
