Klarna’s headcount had fallen from roughly 4,500 to 3,500, a decline Bloomberg reported was largely due to employees leaving and not being replaced—not a single mass layoff. The AI assistant at the center of the claim handled substantial customer-service work, but its “700 agents” figure describes estimated workload capacity, not 700 verified people dismissed. In May 2025, Klarna said it would recruit human support workers again.
What Klarna’s CEO said about hiring
On December 12, 2024, Siemiatkowski told Bloomberg Television that Klarna had “stopped hiring about a year ago.” Bloomberg reported that the company’s workforce had declined from approximately 4,500 to 3,500 during that period, primarily through natural attrition. In other words, employees left and the company generally did not replace them; the figures do not establish that Klarna fired 1,000 people to make room for AI. Bloomberg’s interview and contemporaneous reporting on the workforce change provide the context for the headline.
The statement is not proof that no one was hired into any role. TechCrunch reported two days later that Klarna’s careers site still listed human positions; the company characterized its approach as not actively recruiting to expand its workforce. That makes “hiring stopped” best understood as a broad hiring restraint, not a verified, company-wide count of zero hires. TechCrunch’s report on the listings describes that qualification.
What the AI assistant did
Klarna launched an OpenAI-powered customer-service assistant in February 2024. In its first month, the company said it handled about 2.3 million conversations—roughly two-thirds of customer-service chats—and performed work equivalent to 700 full-time agents. Klarna also reported that average resolution time fell from about 11 minutes to under two minutes, repeat inquiries declined by 25%, and customer satisfaction was comparable to human agents in the company’s internal measurements. These are company-reported results, not independent measurements. Klarna’s February 2024 announcement details those initial claims.

The assistant was built for customer-service conversations and related support tasks, not as a general-purpose replacement for every job at Klarna. The company said it was available in 23 markets, around the clock, and in more than 35 languages. Those capabilities can help a company handle routine questions at scale, but availability and conversation volume alone do not show how well a system handles every dispute, account problem, or unusual case.
Why “700 workers replaced” is misleading
“Equivalent to 700 full-time agents” is a workload estimate: Klarna compared the volume of support work handled by the assistant with the work it estimated that a group of full-time agents would perform. It is not a tally of 700 named employees who were laid off, nor proof that the assistant directly eliminated 700 jobs. Klarna’s 2025 annual-report filing describes the estimate as based on reductions in chat and telephone conversations after launch. The filing’s AI disclosures also make clear that the company continued to use the assistant at scale.

Several different employment and productivity measures are easy to conflate:
- Workload capacity: The amount of customer-service activity the assistant handled, expressed as an agent-equivalent estimate.
- Headcount: Klarna’s total employees, which Bloomberg reported had fallen from roughly 4,500 to 3,500, largely through attrition.
- Job losses: Specific people laid off or made redundant because of the assistant. The cited figures do not establish such a count.
- Cost or productivity effects: Changes in service costs, response times, or staffing needs, which do not by themselves identify which workers or suppliers were affected.
Some support work may also involve external providers, so a company’s employee count alone cannot capture all changes in the labor used to serve customers. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Klarna used AI to handle a large share of routine support and to reduce the need for some staffing and replacement hiring. It does not support the claim that the assistant directly replaced 700 employees one for one.

Why Klarna brought human support back
In May 2025, Siemiatkowski said Klarna planned to recruit human customer-service workers again, acknowledging that the company’s cost-cutting approach had gone too far and that customers should be able to reach a real person. Bloomberg reported the planned hiring as a move toward human access, including a remote, on-demand model rather than simply restoring the old staffing structure. Bloomberg’s report on the change explains the shift.
In June 2025, TechCrunch described human support as a VIP option in some contexts, not a universal return to the previous customer-service model. Its report on the proposed human-service option reinforces that Klarna was adjusting how customers could reach people, not abandoning automation.

The change points to a practical limit of support automation: a system can resolve many routine requests quickly while still leaving customers who have a complex, sensitive, or disputed problem needing a person. For a financial-services company, a payment problem or account dispute can carry consequences that are not reflected in average response time or chat volume. Efficient automated handling and a dependable human escalation path serve different customer needs.

Klarna’s 2025 annual-report materials say the assistant handled 80% of customer-service chats during the year ended December 31, 2025. The company also reported that the assistant resolved issues faster than human agents on average and continued to estimate its work at more than 700 full-time agents. These remain Klarna’s own operational data and estimates; they do not turn the workload-equivalent figure into a verified number of jobs eliminated. Klarna’s SEC filing presents the figures in the context of its 2025 operations.

Those later results also show why “Klarna reversed course” needs care. The company continued to rely heavily on AI while adding human support back into its model. Its experience is better described as partial substitution: automation absorbed a large portion of a particular workflow, while the company retained and renewed a role for people.
What the case means for workers and customers
For workers, Klarna’s example illustrates how a hiring freeze and attrition can reduce staffing without a headline-making round of layoffs. It also shows why a company’s estimate of work capacity should not be treated as a direct job-loss count. The people, teams, and contractors affected—and whether a role is replaced, reassigned, or removed—require separate evidence.
For customers, the relevant question is not only whether an AI assistant can answer common questions quickly. It is whether the company offers a clear route to a person when an answer is inadequate or the issue needs judgment. Klarna’s later plans to bring human support back indicate that service capacity and customer choice are not interchangeable measures, even as the assistant continues to handle most chats.
