You receive a link from a seller to pay for a car you are about to buy. Should you trust it? KeySavvy is a Seattle transaction service designed to address that uncertainty by handling identity and ownership checks, payment, and sale paperwork after buyer and seller agree on a price. Its process may add safeguards, but the company’s claims are not proof that fraud is eliminated or that every transaction is risk-free.
What problem does KeySavvy address?
Private-party sales put buyer and seller on opposite sides of a trust problem. A buyer may pay and then discover the seller cannot transfer valid ownership or the car cannot be registered. A seller may hand over the vehicle without receiving payment that is genuine and settled.
KeySavvy was founded by former TRED colleagues Andrew Crowell and Jason Hoetger. In its 2022 profile, GeekWire described the service as an intermediary for transactions arranged elsewhere: the parties agree on a price, then use the seller’s KeySavvy payment link, sign documents electronically, and complete identity and ownership verification before the car changes hands. Crowell described the company’s role as educating buyers about risks such as purchasing a car they cannot register (GeekWire, August 13, 2022).
How does a KeySavvy transaction work?
The current KeySavvy site says it works alongside listings on other marketplaces. It says it processes the transaction as a dealer—buying the vehicle from the seller and selling it to the buyer—which the company says gives it access to DMV data and enables title checks and temporary permits. The company’s stated steps are:

- Complete identity, ownership, and title checks. KeySavvy says it uses third-party identity verification and combines public records, seller-provided information, and DMV records to verify ownership. It says it checks for loans and liens that could prevent registration and provides an NMVTIS report. Title brands are disclosed before payment.
- Sign the sale documents electronically. KeySavvy says it creates an electronically signed bill of sale and provides title instructions.
- Complete payment and handover. The seller gives the buyer the vehicle according to the transaction process; KeySavvy says it provides a temporary permit and handles payment coordination.
These are descriptions of KeySavvy’s process, not independent evidence that it catches every title issue or prevents fraud. A buyer may separately purchase a CARFAX or AutoCheck report, according to the company; those reports are distinct from the NMVTIS report it says it provides. Review the documents and disclosures yourself, and do not treat a clean result from any one check as a guarantee about the vehicle.
What does KeySavvy cost now?
KeySavvy’s current official site lists a $99 transaction fee for each side, plus a possible $99 seller fee if KeySavvy pays off a loan. The parties can split the transaction fee or have one party pay it. The company says it charges only when the transaction completes and does not charge a cancellation fee. The two historical amounts show why an older article or fee reference should not be used as a current quote. Include any loan-payoff charge when comparing the total cost with another way of completing the sale.
How long does verification and payment take?
KeySavvy says verification generally takes 15–30 minutes during business hours. That is a company estimate for verification, not a promise that the entire sale will finish in that time. The company says a seller’s lender can delay a transaction and payment confirmation may take up to one business day depending on the buyer’s bank. For a sale above $50,000, it says the buyer must pay by wire transfer. Confirm the required payment method and timing before setting a vehicle handover.

What should buyers and sellers check before using it?
- Vehicle and buyer eligibility: KeySavvy says the car must have a US title and the buyer needs a US address to receive the title.
- Title, liens, and registration: Read the ownership findings and title-brand disclosures, and ask how any lien will be resolved. A transaction service cannot make an ineligible vehicle registrable simply by processing a payment.
- Payment and timing: Agree on when the vehicle will be released, how payment will be made, and what counts as confirmed payment. Account for bank settlement and lender coordination.
- Fees: Decide which party pays or whether the transaction fee will be split. Ask whether the seller’s loan payoff adds a charge.
- Financing: The official site describes optional financing through partner lenders and identifies JJ Best for collector-car financing. Availability, rates, fees, and eligibility depend on the offer; verify them directly before relying on financing to complete the purchase.
Does KeySavvy prove it reduces private-sale fraud?
No independent fraud-reduction rate or comparative success measure is established in the sources cited here. GeekWire’s 2022 story presented KeySavvy’s goal and company-described safeguards, while the current official site explains the company’s process. Neither provides an independently measured percentage showing how much fraud the service prevents. Treat “reduce fraud” as the company’s aim, not a quantified or guaranteed outcome.

Compare the practical protections and responsibilities, not just the headline price. For KeySavvy, the published fee buys a company-described package of identity and ownership verification, payment processing, transaction documents, title instructions, and a temporary permit. Before choosing any private-sale route, establish who performs each check, when funds count as settled, who handles liens and title reassignment, what paperwork and permits are included, how long banks or lenders may delay the transfer, and whether the vehicle and buyer meet the service’s geographic requirements. The sources cited here establish KeySavvy’s published details, but do not support a current feature-by-feature comparison with competing services.
